SHORT ANSWER

Do not pay for a course just to sit this exam. Google's Database Engineer path is free to follow, the $300 trial and product trials cover hands-on work, and the exam page links no dedicated instructor-led class; the nearest, Enterprise Database Migration at about $2,495, covers only the migration section. Pay $29 a month for unlimited labs if you lack hands-on time, and buy a month of practice exams for timed revision.

The Professional Cloud Database Engineer exam is for DBAs and engineers who design, run and migrate databases on Google Cloud: choosing between Cloud SQL, AlloyDB, Spanner, Bigtable and Firestore, sizing them, keeping them available and moving data in. Google recommends five or more years of database experience, two of them hands-on with its database services, and the 50-60 questions are mostly scenarios.

The training market is thin and mostly on-demand. Google's own route is a free learning path on Google Skills, the platform formerly called Cloud Skills Boost, with a $29-a-month Pro plan for unlimited labs. The exam page links no dedicated instructor-led class; the nearest, Enterprise Database Migration, costs about $2,495 and covers only migration. Third parties offer a few video courses and practice-exam sets. Hands-on time matters more than any course here.

Is a course required for the GCP Cloud Database Engineer?

Google lists no prerequisites and no training requirement for this exam. You register through CM Connect, pay $200 plus tax where applicable, and sit a two-hour exam online or at a Pearson VUE test centre. Google recommends five or more years of overall database and IT experience, including two years of hands-on work with Google Cloud database solutions. That is a recommendation about experience, not a course or prerequisite certification.

Cheapest credible way to prepare:Follow the free Database Engineer path on Google Skills against the exam guide, do your failovers, restores and migrations in the $300 Google Cloud Free Trial, and add one month of a practice-exam service for timed revision. That is about $40 before the exam fee.

Three ways to prepare

Costs below are training only. The exam fee ($200) is the same whichever route you take.

OFFICIALGoogle Skills Database Engineer path (Pro)
$29/mo (~3 mo)8-12 weeks

Google's own learning path, linked from the exam page: 13 activities, including courses on choosing a Google Cloud database and on strategy, homogeneous and heterogeneous migrations, plus skill-badge labs for Cloud SQL, Spanner, Bigtable, AlloyDB and Database Migration Service. The free Starter plan gives 35 lab credits a month; Pro at $29 a month unlocks unlimited labs.

Best for:Engineers who want Google's own sequence and plenty of real console time on each database service.

Watch out:Little of it is exam technique, and Google says the exam will soon be updated for product renames, so check names against the guide.

GUIDED COURSEGCP Study Hub Database Engineer course
$89 (3 months)6-10 weeks

An independent course of 113 video lessons, five 50-question practice exams and a two-hour exam simulator, plus hands-on labs, sold as an all-access membership at $39 a month, $89 for three months or $249 a year. It gives you a guided order through the four exam sections and a steady supply of timed questions with explanations.

Best for:Candidates who want one structured course with timed practice rather than assembling Google's materials themselves.

Watch out:Independent provider, not Google, and the page shows no last-updated date; confirm it matches the current exam guide.

SELF-STUDYExam guide + free trial + Google Skills Starter
~$408-12 weeks

The exam guide PDF as your checklist, the free Starter plan on Google Skills for the path's courses and some labs, the $300 Google Cloud Free Trial plus the Cloud SQL, AlloyDB and Spanner trials to run your own failovers, point-in-time restores and DMS migrations, the product documentation, and one month of practice exams for timed revision.

Best for:Working DBAs with some Google Cloud exposure who can design their own lab exercises from the exam guide.

Watch out:The $300 credit is for new customers and lasts 90 days; HA and cross-region setups burn it fast, so delete instances after each session.

FAQ

Is a course required for the Professional Cloud Database Engineer exam?

No. Google lists no prerequisites and no training requirement. You register through CM Connect, pay $200 plus tax and sit a two-hour exam online or at a Pearson VUE test centre. Google recommends five or more years of database and IT experience, including two years hands-on with Google Cloud database solutions, but that is a recommendation and nobody checks it when you book.

What does Google's official training for this exam cost?

Google's exam page links one learning path on Google Skills, formerly Cloud Skills Boost. You can follow it on the free Starter plan, which includes 35 lab credits a month; the Pro plan at $29 a month removes the lab limit. The page links no dedicated instructor-led course, though partners sell related Google Cloud classes such as Enterprise Database Migration.

Is the Enterprise Database Migration class enough to pass?

No. Enterprise Database Migration is a four-day Google Cloud course, listed by Fast Lane US at $2,495, about moving databases such as SQL Server and Oracle to Google Cloud. Migration is only about 23% of this exam. Designing, managing and deploying Cloud SQL, AlloyDB, Spanner, Bigtable and Firestore make up the rest, so you still need the learning path and hands-on practice.

Can I get hands-on practice for free?

Mostly. New Google Cloud customers get a $300 credit to spend over 90 days, and Google also offers a 30-day Cloud SQL trial instance, a 30-day AlloyDB trial cluster and a 90-day Spanner trial instance with 10 GB. Google Skills Starter adds 35 free lab credits a month. Highly available and cross-region setups use credit quickly, so delete instances after each session.

Will product renames change what I need to study?

Probably only the names. Google's exam page says the exam will soon be updated to reflect recent branding changes, gives no date, and tells candidates to check the exam guide for the product names used on the exam. Courses and practice tests may still use older names, so map them to the names in the current guide before you book.
