GCP Cloud Database Engineer exam readiness checklist - go / no-go board
Product names on the exam are being refreshedGoogle's exam page says this exam will soon be updated to reflect recent branding changes, and gives no date. It points candidates to the exam guide for the product names used on the exam, so study from the current guide rather than older course notes.

The Professional Cloud Database Engineer exam is aimed at database administrators and engineers who design, run and migrate databases on Google Cloud. Google recommends five or more years of database and IT experience, two of them hands-on with Google Cloud database services. The 50-60 questions are mostly scenarios: a workload, its constraints and several designs that could work, only one of which meets every requirement.

Being ready means you can make those calls quickly and defend them: which service, what size, which availability model, how to back it up and how to move it from where it runs today without breaking the application. Recognising product names is not enough. Google publishes no pass mark, so this checklist uses the exam guide's section weights to show where a gap costs most. Tick only what you could do today, without notes.

How to use this checklist

Tick only what you can do today, without notes. Each tick is weighted by its domain's share of the official outline, so the score follows the exam, not the number of boxes. A heavy domain (15%+ of the weight) at NO-GO holds the verdict even when the total looks fine. Your ticks are saved in this browser only.

GO · 85%+Book the exam. Use the countdown below to finish.
HOLD · 60-84%Close. Spend one or two weeks on the amber domains, then re-check.
NO-GO · under 60%Not yet. Booking now mostly buys a retake.

The GCP Cloud Database Engineer readiness checklist

19 items across 4 domains, each one a thing the exam expects you to do rather than recognise.

01Design innovative, scalable, and highly available cloud database solutions~32%
02Manage a solution that can span multiple database technologies~25%
03Migrate data solutions~23%
04Deploy scalable and highly available databases in Google Cloud~20%

Your go / no-go board

One lamp per domain, one verdict overall. Amber and red rows are your study plan for the next week or two.

Red flags: don't book yet if...

Any one of these on the GCP Cloud Database Engineer is a better predictor of a fail than a low tick count.

NO-GO IF

You can name the database services but not choose between them

Most questions describe a workload and offer several services that would all run it. Knowing what each product is scores little; knowing which one fits the stated constraints is the exam.

Fix:Build a one-page matrix of Cloud SQL, AlloyDB, Spanner, Bigtable and Firestore against consistency, scale, latency, HA model, cost and migration path, then quiz yourself from it.

NO-GO IF

You have never run a Database Migration Service job

Migration is about 23% of the exam, and its questions turn on downtime budgets, source engines, replication and fallback, which are hard to reason about from slides alone.

Fix:In a sandbox project, migrate a small MySQL or PostgreSQL database with DMS, including continuous replication, validation and promoting the destination.

NO-GO IF

You mix up RPO and RTO, or high availability and disaster recovery

Backup, replica and failover questions are built on these distinctions. Confusing them leads straight to options that sound right but miss the requirement.

Fix:For each service, write down what HA, cross-region replicas, backups and point-in-time recovery each protect against, and which one a stated RPO or RTO actually needs.

NO-GO IF

You have little hands-on time operating Google Cloud databases

Google recommends two years of hands-on work with its database services. The scenarios assume you have tuned queries, restored backups and failed instances over, not just read about them.

Fix:Spend extra weeks in a sandbox doing each operation yourself: a restore to a point in time, a replica promotion, a failover and a major-version upgrade.

NO-GO IF

You are studying from product names the exam guide no longer uses

Google's exam page warns that the exam will soon be updated for recent branding changes and tells candidates to check the exam guide for the product names used on the exam.

Fix:Download the current exam guide PDF and map any older names in your course notes to the names it uses before you book.

The numbers that say you're ready

Rules of thumb, not official thresholds: Google Cloud does not publish a readiness score. Hit all four before you pay for a booking.

Timed practice score80%+ on two unseen full-length sets

A rule of thumb, not an official threshold. Google publishes no pass mark, so a clear margin on questions you have not seen before is the safest proxy.

Pace60 questions in about 100 minutes

Rule of thumb: two hours for up to 60 questions is two minutes each. Finishing early leaves time to revisit flagged scenarios, which are long to reread.

Hands-on proofA failover, a point-in-time restore and a DMS migration done yourself

Rule of thumb: these three tasks sit behind a large share of the design, manage, migrate and deploy questions, and doing them once makes the options easier to judge.

Explain your weakest sectionTeach it for five minutes without notes

Rule of thumb: if you can explain why one design beats another in your lowest-scoring section, the gap is closed; if you can only list features, it is not.

Booking and ID checklist

The logistics that trip people up are specific to the GCP Cloud Database Engineer and its delivery provider. Work through them in order.

STEP 014-6 weeks out

Create or update your CM Connect profile

Register from the exam page, which takes you to CM Connect (Certmetrics). Your legal first and last name must match your government photo ID and be in Romanized characters, or Pearson cannot schedule you.

STEP 024-6 weeks out

Choose test centre or online

Under Schedule/Launch an Exam, pick a Pearson VUE test centre or OnVUE online proctoring, then English or Japanese. CM Connect signs you into Pearson automatically; no separate Pearson account is needed.

STEP 034-6 weeks out

Pay the US$200 fee

Pay by card, voucher or coupon code at checkout; tax is added where applicable. The price is the same for test centre and online delivery.

STEP 043-5 weeks out

Request accommodations before scheduling

Accommodations are requested in CM Connect and must be approved before you can schedule. Google allows 5-7 business days for review, and arranging them can take up to 30 days for a test centre.

STEP 0524+ h before

Run the OnVUE system test

For online exams, Google asks you to run Pearson's system test and download the OnVUE application at least 24 hours ahead, on the same computer and network you will use.

STEP 0624+ h before

Reschedule or cancel in time

Changes made 24 hours or more before the start are free. Inside 24 hours a late fee applies, and a voucher can only be reused if you cancel before that window.

STEP 07Exam day

Bring the right ID and arrive on time

Test centre: arrive 15 minutes early with two IDs, one a government-issued photo ID. Online: launch from 10 minutes before to 20 minutes after the start time, or the fee is forfeited.

Exam-week countdown: T-7 to T-0

T-77 days out

Sit a full timed practice set of 50-60 questions in two hours. Re-tick this checklist and spend the week on any section that is not green, with migration scenarios first if they are weak.

T-33 days out

Online: rerun the OnVUE system test on your exam computer and network. Test centre: confirm the address and travel time. Decide now if you need to move the date; the free change window closes 24 hours before.

T-1Day before

Light review only: your service-choice matrix and HA, DR and backup notes. Check that your CM Connect name matches your ID, and clear your desk and room if testing online.

T-0Exam day

Eat and use the bathroom first, because no breaks are allowed. Online, launch from 10 minutes before your slot; at a test centre, arrive 15 minutes early with both IDs.

Test-day rules

✓ Allowed / expected

  • A government-issued photo ID whose name matches CM Connect exactly, plus a second signed ID at a test centre
  • Only your computer on the desk for an online exam, in a quiet, well-lit room you can show in a room scan
  • Approved accommodations, such as an authorised break, arranged in CM Connect before you schedule
  • Switching between online and test centre delivery if you cancel 24 or more hours ahead and rebook

✕ Not allowed

  • Breaks of any kind: taking one cancels the session and Google rejects the result
  • Scratch paper, pens, notes, phones, smart watches, external monitors, food or drink in an online session
  • Reading questions aloud, talking to anyone, or leaving the camera's view
  • Other people in the room, or photographing the provisional result before closing the secure browser

After you pass

Provisional result, then confirmation

A provisional pass or fail appears on screen when you submit and later in CM Connect. Google reviews the exam record against its terms and confirms the official result within 7-10 days.

Certificate and badge

Once the result is verified, Google issues a digital certificate and badge. Badges sit in the Google Cloud credential wallet run by Credly, which emails you instructions to claim yours.

Renewal every two years

Professional certifications last two years. Renewal opens 60 days before your inactive date and, for this certification, means passing the exam again; a 50% renewal discount code is waiting in CM Connect.

FAQ

What score do I need to pass the Professional Cloud Database Engineer exam?

Google does not publish a passing score. Results are pass or fail only, because the exam is designed to check whether you meet a minimum standard rather than to rank ability. You pass on your total across the whole exam, not section by section. If you fail, the score report in CM Connect breaks performance down by section, which shows where to focus before a retake.

Is this certification still offered, and who delivers the exam now?

Yes. In October 2026 it is listed among Google Cloud's professional certifications with registration open. Since March 2026 Google Cloud exams have been delivered by Pearson, either online through OnVUE or at a Pearson VUE test centre. You still register through CM Connect, which passes you to Pearson without a separate account. Guides that mention Kryterion or Webassessor are out of date.

How much experience do I need before booking?

Google recommends five or more years of database and IT experience, including two years working hands-on with Google Cloud database solutions. There are no formal prerequisites, so you can book without it, but the scenarios assume you have operated databases: tuned queries, restored backups, failed over and migrated. If you lack that history, do each of those tasks yourself in a sandbox project first.

Which section should I study first?

Start with design, at about 32% of the exam, because choosing, sizing and placing the right service feeds questions in every other section. Then management at about 25%, migration at about 23% and deployment at about 20%. Weight your time roughly in that order, but do not skip migration: Database Migration Service and cutover scenarios are hard to answer without having run one.

What happens if I fail?

You can retake after 14 days. A second fail means a 60-day wait and a third means 365 days, with a maximum of four attempts in two years counted across online and test centre sittings. Each attempt costs the full fee. Use the section breakdown in CM Connect to find your weak areas, rerun this checklist and rebook only when those rows are green.
