Almost nobody needs to pay for Generative AI Leader training. Google's own learning path is free, maps to all four exam sections and takes about 7.5 hours, and the study guide and sample questions are free too. Pay for a two-day partner class ($1,800 at New Horizons) only if an employer wants instructor-led training on record, or for a month of Coursera Plus if you want a platform certificate. Otherwise your only cost should be the $99 exam.
Google Cloud's Generative AI Leader is a foundational, business-level certification for managers, consultants, product owners and other decision-makers who need to discuss gen AI and Google's offerings without building them. The exam is 50-60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, online or at a Pearson VUE centre, in English, Japanese, Spanish or Portuguese, and costs $99.
Training is easy to find and much of it is free. Google's own five-course learning path on Google Skills (formerly Cloud Skills Boost) costs nothing and maps to the four exam sections, and Google also publishes a free study guide, exam guide and sample questions. Paid options mostly repackage that material: the same five modules taught live over two days by training partners, or the same course series as a Coursera certificate.
Is a course required for the Google Generative AI Leader?
Google sets no prerequisites and no training requirement for Generative AI Leader. Anyone can register and pay the $99 fee, and Google says the certification suits any job role, with or without hands-on technical experience. There is no experience requirement to mistake for a training rule either. The certification is valid for three years, after which you can renew.
Cheapest credible way to prepare:Take Google's free five-course Generative AI Leader path on Google Skills (about 7.5 hours), read the free study guide and exam guide, try the free sample questions, then pay only the $99 exam fee.
Three ways to prepare
Costs below are training only. The exam fee ($99) is the same whichever route you take.
Five on-demand courses on Google Skills, about 7.5 hours in all: Beyond the Chatbot, Unlock Foundational Concepts, Navigate the Landscape, Gen AI Apps and Gen AI Agents. Together they cover the four exam sections, from gen AI fundamentals to Google Cloud's offerings, output-improvement techniques and business strategy, and the final course includes hands-on agent building. Each course is listed as free.
Best for:Nearly everyone: it is Google's own syllabus for this exam and costs nothing but a sign-in.
Watch out:Product names change fast in this field, so check each course's last-updated date against the current exam guide before you book.
Google Cloud training partners teach the same five modules live as a two-day class, Generative AI Leader (GC-GAIL). New Horizons lists $1,800 for its virtual class, next scheduled 9-10 November 2026, and Fast Lane lists its two-day GAIL course in Germany at EUR 1,300 excluding tax. You get an instructor to question and classmates to compare use cases with.
Best for:Teams whose employer wants a dated, instructor-led course on record, or leaders who will not finish self-paced video.
Watch out:The agenda mirrors the free Google Skills path, so you pay for the live instructor and the fixed date, not for extra material.
Work from Google's free exam guide, which weights the sections at about 30, 35, 20 and 15%, and the free 11-page study guide. Take Google's untimed sample questions as often as you like and add the free 30-question Tutorials Dojo sampler. Business-minded candidates who already use Gemini or similar tools at work often need little more.
Best for:People already fluent in gen AI basics who mainly need Google's product lineup and the exam's framing.
Watch out:Google Cloud's gen AI offerings are about 35% of the exam; general AI knowledge without Google's product names will not carry you.

Is Google's Generative AI Leader learning path really free?
Yes. Each of the five courses in the Generative AI Leader path on Google Skills, the platform formerly called Cloud Skills Boost, is listed as free; you only need to sign in. Together they take about 7.5 hours. Google's study guide, exam guide and sample questions are free as well, so the $99 exam fee can be your only cost.
Do I need a paid course to pass the Generative AI Leader exam?
No. Google lists no prerequisites or required training and says the exam suits any role, with or without hands-on technical experience. The free path covers all four sections: fundamentals of gen AI (about 30%), Google Cloud's gen AI offerings (35%), techniques to improve model output (20%) and business strategies (15%). Paid courses mostly repackage the same five modules.
What does the two-day instructor-led course add?
A live instructor and a fixed date. The Generative AI Leader (GC-GAIL) class from Google Cloud training partners runs over two days and follows the same five modules as the free path, from Beyond the Chatbot to Gen AI Agents. New Horizons lists $1,800 for its virtual class, and Fast Lane lists EUR 1,300 excluding tax in Germany.
How long should I study for Generative AI Leader?
Google publishes no figure. The free learning path takes about 7.5 hours, and most business-oriented candidates add a few hours of study-guide reading and sample questions, so 10 to 20 hours over one or two weeks is a reasonable rule of thumb. Allow more time if Google Cloud's product names are new to you.
What is the Generative AI Leader exam like?
It has 50 to 60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, taken online with a remote proctor or at a Pearson VUE test centre. It is offered in English, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese and costs $99 plus tax where applicable. There are no prerequisites, Google's certification page lists no passing score, and the certification is valid for three years.
