PMI-PBA Training vs Self-Study: Do You Need a Course? (2026)

The PMI-PBA has an education-hours rule. Here is the cheapest way to meet it, what full courses cost, and what self-study still has to cover.

SHORT ANSWER

You will pay for some training for PMI-PBA, because PMI requires 35 contact hours in business analysis. It need not be expensive: a 38-hour Udemy course at $19.99 list meets the rule if you keep its certificate. Pay about $2,000 for a four-day bootcamp only if your employer funds it or you need a live instructor. PMI membership is worth it either way, since the $150 exam discount covers its cost and brings PMI's own guides.

PMI-PBA is PMI's business analysis credential, aimed at analysts who work on projects and programs: requirements leads, product and systems analysts, and project managers who own the requirements work. The exam is 200 questions in 240 minutes, taken at a Pearson VUE center or online, and the Analysis domain alone is 35% of it. Unlike PMI's PgMP, it carries a hard education rule: 35 contact hours in business analysis.

That rule shapes the market. PMI sells no PMI-PBA course and its exam-prep page lists none, so the hours come from third parties: four-day bootcamps at roughly $2,000-2,400, a few self-paced courses from training firms, and Udemy video courses under $20 that issue a certificate of completion. PMI's own contribution is two business analysis guides, free as PDFs to members.

Is a course required for the PMI-PBA?

PMI requires 35 contact hours of education in business analysis practices from every PMI-PBA candidate, on top of experience: 60 months of business analysis work in the last 8 years with a secondary diploma, 36 months with a bachelor's degree, or 24 months with a degree from a GAC-accredited program. PMI names no approved-provider list; the application asks for the institution, course and qualifying hours, and any application can be audited.

Cheapest way to meet the rule:A self-paced Udemy course long enough to cover 35 hours, such as PMI-PBA Masterclass 2026 (38.4 hours total, $19.99 list, often about $12), with its completion certificate kept for a possible audit. Business analysis training you have already completed, for example at university, can count if you can document the hours.

PMI-PBA Masterclass 2026 on Udemy runs 38.4 hours in 256 lectures (32 hours of it video), was updated in September 2026 and states that it fulfils PMI's 35 contact hours. It lists at $19.99 and is often discounted to about $12. Finishing it gives you the completion certificate to cite on your application and a structured pass through all five exam domains.

Best for:Practising analysts who need the 35 hours cheaply and can pace themselves through 38 hours of lessons

Watch out:Check real course length: one Udemy PBA course advertises 35 PDUs with only 7.5 hours of content. Claim only the hours you completed.

Do I need 35 contact hours for PMI-PBA?

Yes. All three eligibility sets on PMI's PMI-PBA page require 35 contact hours of business analysis education, alongside 60, 36 or 24 months of business analysis experience depending on your degree. PMI does not restrict which provider you use, so a university course, a bootcamp or a self-paced online course can qualify, provided it covers business analysis and you can document the hours.

Does PMI offer an official PMI-PBA course?

No. PMI's exam-prep page sells courses for PMP, CAPM, PMI-ACP, PMI-CP, PMI-RMP and PMI-PMOCP, but nothing for PMI-PBA, and the PMI-PBA page lists only the PMBOK Guide as a study aid. Members can download The PMI Guide to Business Analysis and Business Analysis for Practitioners: A Practice Guide, Second Edition free. Bootcamps from training firms fill the gap.

How much does the PMI-PBA exam cost?

PMI lists the exam at $405 for members and $555 for non-members, paid after your application is accepted. Individual membership is $139 a year, so joining first saves $11 net on the first attempt and adds free PDFs of PMI's business analysis guides. If you do not pass, you can attempt the exam up to three times in one year.

Has PMI-PBA been renamed or retired?

Not as of October 2026. PMI still lists the PMI Professional in Business Analysis with a 200-question, 240-minute exam, five domains (Needs Assessment 18%, Planning 22%, Analysis 35%, Traceability and Monitoring 15%, Evaluation 10%) and fees of $405 for members and $555 for non-members. PMI revises exam outlines from time to time, so check the page before you apply.
