SHORT ANSWER

Most PgMP candidates do not need a paid course. PMI requires no training, and the real gate is the panel review of your program experience, which no class can supply. Pay for an ATP bootcamp only if your employer funds it or you want help writing your experience summaries. Everyone else can prepare with PMI membership, the free Standard and a mock-exam set for about $160, and the $200 member discount on the exam covers that.

PgMP is PMI's credential for people who run programs: groups of related projects managed together for a shared business benefit. Candidates are usually senior program managers, PMO leads and portfolio staff with years of program work behind them. Getting in is the hard part. PMI screens your application, then a panel of volunteer PgMP holders reviews your written experience summaries before you can book the 170-question, 240-minute exam.

The training market is thin. PMI sells no PgMP course of its own; it points candidates to The Standard for Program Management (a free PDF for members) and to its Authorized Training Partners. A handful of firms run live virtual bootcamps for roughly $1,500-2,000, and Udemy has a few low-cost video courses and mock-exam sets. The best-known PgMP prep books were written for earlier editions of the Standard.

Is a course required for the PgMP?

PMI sets no course or education-hour requirement for PgMP. Eligibility is experience only, earned within the past 15 years: a secondary diploma with 48 months of project experience (or a PMP) plus 84 months of program experience; a bachelor's degree with 48 plus 48 months; or a degree from a GAC-accredited program with 36 plus 36 months. The panel review judges that experience, not any training.

Cheapest credible way to prepare:Join PMI ($139 a year), which cuts the exam fee by $200 and unlocks The Standard for Program Management as a PDF. Add PMI's free exam content outline and sample questions, then a $19.99-list Udemy mock-exam set. Net of the member discount, preparation costs almost nothing.

Three ways to prepare

Costs below are training only. The exam fee ($800 / $1,000) is the same whichever route you take.

OFFICIALPMI ATP live bootcamp (PMTraining)
$1,498 list3 days + 4-8 weeks review

A three-day live virtual class, Monday to Wednesday, from PMTraining, a PMI Premier Authorized Training Partner. It includes a PgMP workbook, exam content outline exercises, practice questions, guidance on the PgMP application and 26 PDUs. List price is $1,498; dated sale prices in October 2026 ran from $998 to $1,398. Project Management Academy's four-day virtual class at $1,995 is the main alternative.

Best for:Candidates whose employer pays and who want an instructor to check their application and experience summaries

Watch out:No course is required, and three days of lectures cannot supply the program experience that the panel review actually judges.

GUIDED COURSEUdemy video course + mock exams
~$40 list4-8 weeks

The Complete PgMP Prep Course on Udemy (6.5 hours of video in 127 lectures, updated July 2026) follows the structure of the Standard with a worked example program and practice questions. Pair it with a fifth-edition mock-exam set, also $19.99 list, aligned to the March 2024 exam content outline. Udemy usually sells both below list price.

Best for:Program managers who want a structured walk-through of the Standard but do not need a live instructor

Watch out:Udemy courses are independent and not reviewed by PMI; check each targets the fifth edition and 2024 outline, and still read the Standard.

SELF-STUDYStandard 5th ed. + ECO + mock exams
~$160 incl. membership8-12 weeks

PMI membership ($139 a year) gives you The Standard for Program Management, Fifth Edition and the PMBOK Guide as free PDFs and lowers the exam fee from $1,000 to $800. Add PMI's free exam content outline, handbook and sample questions, then a $19.99-list Udemy mock-exam set for timed practice. The member discount more than pays for the membership.

Best for:Experienced program managers who mainly need PMI's vocabulary and exam practice, not new knowledge

Watch out:The Standard is principle-based and says nothing about exam technique; you need timed mocks to handle 170 situational questions in 4 hours.

FAQ

Is a PgMP course required?

No. PMI sets no education-hour or course requirement for PgMP, unlike the 35 hours PMP demands. Eligibility rests on experience within the past 15 years: 48 months of project experience (or a PMP) plus 84 months of program experience with a secondary diploma, 48 plus 48 months with a bachelor's degree, or 36 plus 36 months with a degree from a GAC-accredited program.

How much does the PgMP exam cost?

PMI lists the PgMP exam at $800 for members and $1,000 for non-members, and you pay only after PMI accepts your application. Individual PMI membership is $139 a year, so joining saves $61 on the first attempt alone and includes free PDFs of The Standard for Program Management and the PMBOK Guide. No training is bundled into the fee.

What is the PgMP panel review?

After PMI accepts your application and you pay the exam fee, a panel of volunteer PgMP holders assesses the experience summaries you wrote on program strategy, governance and leadership. Only after you pass this panel review assessment can you schedule the exam. It tests documented experience, not course attendance, so a bootcamp helps only if it coaches you on writing those summaries.

Does PMI sell its own PgMP prep course?

No. PMI's exam-prep page sells e-learning courses for PMP, CAPM, PMI-ACP, PMI-CP, PMI-RMP and PMI-PMOCP, but for PgMP it points to The Standard for Program Management, Fifth Edition, the PMBOK Guide and instructor-led classes from Authorized Training Partners. PMTraining, a Premier ATP, lists a 3-day virtual PgMP class at $1,498.

How long should I study for PgMP?

Plan roughly 80 to 120 hours over two to three months once your application is accepted. Bootcamps compress the content into three or four days but still expect weeks of review afterwards. Spend most of the time on program life cycle management, which PMI weights at 44% of the exam, and on timed practice: 170 questions in 240 minutes leaves under 90 seconds each.
