SHORT ANSWER

Most SHRM-SCP candidates do not need a paid course: no training is required, and the exam tests judgment you build at work. Buy the SHRM Certification Prep System if your employer reimburses it or your experience covers only part of the BASK. Pay for a live class only if you need a schedule to finish, and pick one that bundles the Prep System, since that is mostly what you are buying. Experienced HR leaders can prepare on about $80 of materials.

SHRM-SCP is SHRM's senior credential for HR people who set policy and strategy rather than run day-to-day processes: HR directors, senior business partners and heads of HR. The exam is 134 questions in 3 hours 40 minutes at a Prometric test center, offered in two windows a year (May 1-July 15 and December 1-February 15), and 54 of those questions are situational-judgment scenarios rather than recall.

The training market is unusually centralized. SHRM sells its own Certification Prep System (the renamed SHRM Learning System), and most instructor-led classes, run by SHRM chapters, chambers of commerce and university extension programs, are built on that same licensed material. So a class often means paying for a teacher on top of a product you could buy alone. Independent options are thinner: question-bank apps and a few books.

Is a course required for the SHRM-SCP?

SHRM requires no course, prep class or education hours for the SHRM-SCP. Eligibility is experience-based: at least 3 years of strategic-level HR or HR-related work, where each year counts only if you logged 1,000+ hours of such work, or holding SHRM-CP for 3 years while working in, or moving into, a strategic role. No degree or HR job title is required.

Is a SHRM-SCP prep course required?

No. SHRM sets no course or education-hour requirement. You qualify through experience: at least three years of strategic-level HR work, with each year counting only if it included 1,000 or more hours of that work, or by holding SHRM-CP for three years while working in or moving into a strategic role. No degree or HR title is needed, and SHRM's Prep System is sold separately from the exam.

How much does the SHRM-SCP exam cost?

SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP share one price list, effective June 3, 2026: $350 for members and $450 for non-members at the early bird rate, or $399 and $499 at the standard rate. Both include a $50 nonrefundable application fee, and the standard rate adds a $49 deadline fee. Lower military and student rates exist. Study materials are not included in any of these prices.

Is the SHRM Learning System the same as the SHRM Certification Prep System?

Yes. For 2026 SHRM renamed the SHRM Learning System the SHRM Certification Prep System, and one program serves both SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP candidates. List prices are $820 for members and $1,130 for non-members online-only, or $1,020 and $1,330 with printed books. Many chapter and university classes include it in their fee, so check before you buy it twice.

When can I take the SHRM-SCP?

There are two testing windows a year: May 1 to July 15, and December 1 to February 15. You must apply in the application period tied to your window; for the December 2026 to February 2027 window, the standard period runs September 1 to December 24, 2026. The exam is taken in person at a Prometric test center, in two 110-minute sections.

How long should I study for the SHRM-SCP?

Chapter and university classes run 9 to 15 weeks, which is a fair guide for self-study too. Plan roughly 60 to 100 hours, weighted toward situational-judgment practice, since 54 of the 134 questions are scenario-based. Senior HR leaders with broad experience usually need less content review and more practice picking the single best action SHRM is looking for.
