PCAP Training vs Self-Study: Do You Need a Course? (2026)

No course is required for the PCAP. Here is what the training on the market costs, what it gives you, and when self-study is the smarter spend.

PCAP-31-04 releases on October 31, 2026The Python Institute lists PCAP-31-03 as the active exam and PCAP-31-04 as pending release on October 31, 2026, calling it a routine exam-version update. The PCAP certification continues and credentials already earned keep their five-year validity. No retirement date for PCAP-31-03 was published when we checked, and the OpenEDG store already sells PCAP-31-04 vouchers at $295.
SHORT ANSWER

Most PCAP candidates should not pay for a course. The Python Institute requires none, and its own Python Essentials 2, written for this exam, is free. Spend money only on the $49 official practice test and the voucher. OpenEDG's live Python 102 class makes sense if you want an instructor and fixed weekend sessions, because its $999 list price already includes the exam, a retake and the practice test. Watch for PCAP-31-04 from October 31, 2026.

PCAP is the Python Institute's associate-level exam, the step after PCEP and before PCPP1. It suits junior developers, testers, data analysts and career changers who can already write basic Python and want proof of intermediate skills: modules and packages, exceptions, strings, file handling and, above all, object-oriented programming, which is 34% of the exam. It has 40 questions in 65 minutes, with 70% needed to pass.

The training market is unusual because the certifying body gives its own course away. OpenEDG's Python Essentials 1 and 2 are free, self-paced and written for PCEP and PCAP, on its Edube platform and on Cisco Networking Academy. The paid layer is small: a live online Python 102 class from OpenEDG at $999 list with the exam voucher included, an official $49 practice test, and a handful of Udemy courses and mock-exam sets.

Is a course required for the PCAP?

The Python Institute sets no prerequisites and no training requirement for PCAP. Its exam page says there are no formal prerequisites and only recommends earning PCEP first. There is no experience rule either. You buy a voucher and sit the exam online through OpenEDG TestNow, or through Pearson VUE at a test center or with OnVUE online proctoring. The credential is valid for five years.

Cheapest credible way to prepare:Work through Python Essentials 2 (free, about 58 hours) on Edube or Cisco Networking Academy, adding Python Essentials 1 (free, about 42 hours) first if your basics are shaky. Then take the official $49 practice test before you buy the $295 TestNow voucher.

Three ways to prepare

Costs below are training only. The exam fee ($295-$325) is the same whichever route you take.

OFFICIALOpenEDG Python 102 live class + voucher
$999 list, exam incl.8 weekend sessions (24 h)

OpenEDG's own instructor-led course: eight 3-hour live sessions on Microsoft Teams, held at weekends, covering OOP, modules, exceptions and file handling. The $999 list price, on sale at $649.05 in October 2026, includes a practice test and a PCAP exam voucher with retake, worth $359 bought separately, so the teaching itself costs about $640 at list.

Best for:Learners who want a live instructor and fixed sessions, and would buy the exam voucher and retake anyway

Watch out:Every session must be attended to complete the course, and it covers the same ground as the free Python Essentials 2.

GUIDED COURSEUdemy PCAP video course
$84.99 list3-6 weeks

Adrian Wiech's Python PCAP: Pass Certified Associate in Python Programming has the most ratings of the PCAP courses on Udemy (3,336 in October 2026), with about 6 hours of content focused on the exam. List price is $84.99 and Udemy routinely discounts it. Add a mock-exam set if you want more timed practice than the course provides.

Best for:Learners who know Python basics and want a short, exam-focused recap rather than a 58-hour course

Watch out:Six hours is a recap, not a course from zero; you still need to write classes yourself, which Python Essentials 2's free labs make you do.

SELF-STUDYPython Essentials 1-2 + official practice test
~$496-12 weeks at 7 h a week

OpenEDG's free Python Essentials 2 (58 hours, recommended at 7 hours a week) follows the PCAP syllabus module by module, with labs, quizzes and module tests, on Edube or Cisco Networking Academy. Python Essentials 1 (42 hours) covers the PCEP basics first if needed. The official PCAP-31-03 Practice Test Compendium ($49) checks readiness against the real item style.

Best for:Most candidates: the free official course was written for this exam, and the only spend is the practice test

Watch out:Edube labels Python Essentials 2 as PCAP-31-03 ready; check for an update covering PCAP-31-04 after October 31, 2026.

FAQ

Is a course required for PCAP?

No. The Python Institute lists no formal prerequisites and no training requirement for PCAP. Earning PCEP first is recommended, not required, and there is no experience rule. You buy a voucher and book the exam through OpenEDG TestNow, which is proctored online, or through Pearson VUE at a test center or with OnVUE online proctoring.

How much does the PCAP exam cost?

Through OpenEDG TestNow the voucher is $295, or $345 with a retake, $315 with the practice test and $359 with both. Through Pearson VUE it is $325, or $375 with a retake, $345 with the practice test and $389 with both. The practice test alone is $49. These are list prices from the OpenEDG store in October 2026.

Are the Python Essentials courses really free?

Yes. Python Essentials 1 (about 42 hours) and Python Essentials 2 (about 58 hours) are free on OpenEDG's Edube platform, and Cisco Networking Academy offers Python Essentials 2 free as well. Python Essentials 2 is the one aligned to PCAP; Python Essentials 1 targets PCEP. Neither includes an exam voucher, which you buy separately.

What changes with PCAP-31-04?

The Python Institute lists PCAP-31-04 as pending release on October 31, 2026 and describes it as a routine exam-version update; PCAP-31-03 remains the active version until then. The certification continues, and existing credentials keep their five-year validity. A retirement date for PCAP-31-03 and a 31-04 syllabus were not published on the PCAP pages when we checked in October 2026.

Does the PCAP certification expire?

Yes. The Python Institute's exam page lists PCAP validity as five years, so it is not a lifetime credential. PCAP is the associate step between PCEP at entry level and PCPP1 at professional level, and moving up to PCPP1 is the natural next step. Check the Python Institute's policies for renewal options well before your five years run out.
