SNCF is the Cisco exam where paid training buys the most, because licensed FMC labs, remote-access VPN and cloud integrations are hard to reproduce at home. If an employer pays, take the official training, ideally the single SNCF course once it ships. Self-funded candidates who run Secure Firewall at work can pass on the Cisco Press guide, an evaluation-mode lab and the v1.2 topics for under $300. Everyone else should weigh the two $900 Cisco U. paths.
Exam 300-710 SNCF, Securing Networks with Cisco Firewalls v1.2, is a CCNP Security concentration exam: pair it with the 350-701 SCOR core for CCNP Security, or pass it alone for a Cisco Certified Specialist badge. It runs 90 minutes, costs $300 and tests Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense and its Management Center: deployment modes and high availability, access and intrusion policy, NAT and VPN, troubleshooting tools and integrations.
SNCF has been the odd one out in training. It was the only CCNP concentration whose official prep was two five-day courses, SFWIPF and SFWIPA, so the instructor-led route costs about $8,000, and Cisco is merging them into one SNCF course by the end of 2026. Third-party choice is thin: an INE path and a 2022 Cisco Press guide. Labs are the hard part, because FMCv is heavy and evaluation mode blocks remote-access VPN.
Is a course required for the 300-710 SNCF?
Cisco requires no course for 300-710. You book through Pearson VUE, pay $300 or redeem Cisco Learning Credits, and sit the exam. Cisco lists the prerequisites for CCNP Security as none. To earn the full CCNP you must also pass the 350-701 SCOR core within three years of your first CCNP Security exam, which is an exam requirement, not a training one. Firewall experience is assumed, never checked.
Cheapest credible way to prepare:Use the free v1.2 topics as your checklist, the Cisco Press Secure Firewall guide ($69.99 list) for theory, and FTDv plus FMCv in CML Personal ($199) under the 90-day evaluation licence for labs: about $270 before the exam fee. Study remote-access VPN from the docs, since evaluation mode will not deploy it.
Three ways to prepare
Costs below are training only. The exam fee ($300) is the same whichever route you take.
Two five-day instructor-led courses on Cisco courseware. SFWIPF covers Secure Firewall deployment, high availability, NAT, packet flow, access control, intrusion and file policies and basic troubleshooting; SFWIPA adds SSL decryption, site-to-site and remote-access VPN, identity policy, Snort rules, integrations and advanced troubleshooting. Labs run on hosted FTD and FMC, and each course earns 40 CE credits.
Best for:Firewall engineers whose employer funds training and who will run FTD and FMC in production
Watch out:Cisco says few candidates took both, leaving gaps. A single SNCF course is due by the end of 2026, so ask partners before buying two.
About 19 hours of video from Piotr Kaluzny and Todd Lammle across three Firepower Threat Defense courses, with 18 labs and quizzes, inside INE Premium, which also unlocks the SCOR path and the rest of INE's library. It walks the outline for a tenth of the class price, but the path page names no exam version, so check it against v1.2.
Best for:Self-funded candidates who want a structured video course and some hosted lab time
Watch out:Built around Firepower-era naming; confirm v1.2 additions such as Splunk integration, Cisco XDR and Security Cloud Control yourself.
The free v1.2 topics PDF as the checklist, the Cisco Press Secure Firewall and IPS Official Cert Guide for theory, and FTDv and FMCv running in CML Personal under the 90-day evaluation licence for labs. Cisco's Management Center configuration guides cover the newer v1.2 topics and remote-access VPN, which evaluation mode will not deploy.
Best for:Engineers who already run Cisco Secure Firewall at work and have a lab host with plenty of RAM
Watch out:FMCv alone needs 4 vCPUs and 32 GB of RAM in CML, and the 2022 guide predates v1.2 and Secure Firewall 10.

Do I have to take SFWIPF or SFWIPA before the SNCF exam?
No. Cisco has no training requirement for 300-710, and it lists the prerequisites for CCNP Security as none. SFWIPF and SFWIPA are the courses Cisco recommends, but you can sit the exam without either. To earn CCNP Security you also need the 350-701 SCOR core exam, passed within three years of your first CCNP Security exam.
Which official course covers the SNCF exam?
Today, two: Fundamentals of Cisco Firewall Threat Defense and Intrusion Prevention (SFWIPF) and Advanced Techniques for Cisco Firewall Threat Defense and Intrusion Prevention (SFWIPA), each five days. Cisco says few candidates took both, which left blueprint gaps, so it is consolidating them into a single course called SNCF, instructor-led or self-paced on Cisco U., due by the end of calendar 2026.
How much does official SNCF training cost?
Fast Lane's US list price is $4,000 or 40 Cisco Learning Credits for each five-day course, so $8,000 for both. Cisco U. sells each as a self-paced path for $900 or 9 CLCs with 180 days of access; SFWIPF is also included in Cisco U. Essentials ($1,800 a year) and both are in All Access ($6,000 a year). Each course earns 40 CE credits.
Can I lab SNCF for free?
Partly. CML-Free has ASAv but no FTDv or FMCv. Cisco's paid CML editions ship FTDv 10.0 and FMCv 10.0, and FMCv alone needs 4 vCPUs and 32 GB of memory. On your own lab, Smart Licensing evaluation mode lasts 90 days, but Cisco's Management Center guide says remote-access VPN cannot be deployed in evaluation mode, so plan to study that topic from the docs.
Is the Cisco Press SNCF guide still worth buying?
As theory, yes; as a complete v1.2 guide, no. The CCNP Security Cisco Secure Firewall and Intrusion Prevention System Official Cert Guide was published in June 2022 for the earlier objectives. v1.2 adds Splunk integration, Cisco XDR, Security Cloud Control naming and extra troubleshooting tools, and Cisco now points candidates at Secure Firewall 10. Pair the book with the v1.2 topics PDF.
