The minimum lab
Two of the four SNCF domains are Deployment and Configuration at 30% each, and both assume a management centre and a threat-defence device in front of you. The catch is not memory. It is that this exam is gated by licensing twice over: a Cisco service contract to download the images in the first place, and then a Smart Account before some of the blueprint will function at all - because remote-access VPN cannot be configured in evaluation mode and strong encryption needs an export-compliance token. A bigger host does not solve either. Knowing that up front is worth more than any topology diagram.
One firewall is enough to learn the product; it is not enough to learn high availability, which is examinable. The management centre is a separate appliance and it is the heaviest node here by a distance - it is also non-optional, because almost everything in the Configuration domain is done through it rather than on the device.
Where to build it
The platform matters less than the entitlement. Any hypervisor will run these images; the question is whether you can obtain them at all.

If you work somewhere with a Cisco contract, this is the exam to ask your employer about - a single entitlement turns an impossible home lab into a straightforward one. If you do not, plan the whole study around a sandbox and question practice, and do not spend money on a server that will sit idle waiting for images.
Images and horsepower
Both firewall images are heavy, and the management centre is the one that decides your host size.

Plan 64 GB rather than 32. The management centre is the dominant node and it is slow at every memory size - engineers running it with plenty of headroom still report event views taking tens of seconds - so under-provisioning turns study time into waiting. One myth worth killing: the claim that the management centre will not boot below 28 GB is wrong. That figure is an upgrade precondition, not a boot requirement. Below 32 GB you get policy-deployment failures rather than a dead VM.

Work top to bottom. Each step is a thing you build and then break on purpose, and each one is tagged with the blueprint domain it covers, so by the end you have touched the parts of the syllabus a lab can reach.

Eight sub-objectives, 15% of the paper, and most of them assume products you will not have. This is the domain to cover from documentation and questions.
What you can and cannot lab
Cisco publishes the domain weightings but not the number of items or the passing score, so treat the percentages as how the paper is built rather than as a target. The column that matters here is the last one.

The walls you will hit
The walls here are unusually blunt, and the first one decides whether the rest matter.
Cannot be labbed at home
- The images need a service contract. Cisco's own support documentation states both require a valid login and an active service contract, and that a partner account is not sufficient. This blocks more SNCF home labs than anything technical.
- Remote-access VPN cannot be configured in evaluation mode. Cisco says so directly. No amount of memory changes it - the VPN topics need a registered Smart Account.
- Strong encryption needs an export-compliance token. There is no evaluation path to 3DES or AES; you must register with the licensing manager to receive it.
- The 90-day evaluation clock is one-shot. Deregister and the unused portion does not come back, so start it when you start studying rather than when you set the lab up.
- The management centre is non-optional and slow. The Configuration domain assumes you work through it, and it is unhurried at any host size.
- The integration domain assumes an estate. Fifteen per cent of the paper is about talking to products most candidates will not have.
Put those together and the plan changes shape. The free sandbox becomes the default rather than the fallback, because it sidesteps both licensing walls at once. Deployment, Configuration and Troubleshooting - 85% of the paper - are reachable there. The VPN and strong-encryption corners are not reachable anywhere without a Smart Account, so read those and spend the time you saved on questions. And if you are choosing between the two CCNP Security concentrations with no Cisco relationship, sit the identity exam first: it needs only a free account.
A lab proves you can build it. Questions prove you can pass.

How much RAM does an SNCF lab need?

Is SNCF v1.1 or v1.2?
