SHORT ANSWER

Most CHST candidates can self-study: BCSP requires no course, and the exam rewards construction-site experience plus a working knowledge of OSHA 1926. Spend money on practice rather than lectures; the $550 exam bundle adds BCSP's Self-Assessment and a second attempt for $250. Take examCORE ($999) only if your employer pays, and a live review only if your experience sits mostly outside construction or you have not sat a long exam in years.

The CHST is BCSP's credential for people who run safety on construction sites: site safety coordinators, superintendents and foremen with safety duties, and specialists heading toward the ASP and CSP. It is a 4-hour computer-based exam taken at Pearson test centers, built on a blueprint where hazard and risk identification and control carries 36.6% of the weight.

The training market is small. BCSP sells its own online course, examCORE, at $999, plus a Self-Assessment practice test; a handful of safety-training firms such as Bowen EHS and ClickSafety's SPAN team run live reviews and sell workbooks. Because the questions lean on OSHA construction standards and field practice, experienced site safety people can prepare with the free regulations and one practice-question product instead of a class.

Is a course required for the CHST?

BCSP requires no course, OSHA 30 card or formal education for the CHST. Eligibility is experience only: three years in construction safety where at least 35% of job duties required technical skills and knowledge in safety, health and environment. Once BCSP approves your application you have one year to take and pass the exam.

Cheapest credible way to prepare:Work through the free CHST blueprint and OSHA 29 CFR 1926, then buy the $550 exam bundle instead of the $300 single exam: the extra $250 adds BCSP's own Self-Assessment and a second attempt.

Three ways to prepare

Costs below are training only. The exam fee ($426 combo) is the same whichever route you take.

OFFICIALBCSP examCORE for CHST (self-paced online)
$9996 months' access

BCSP's own CHST course: 25 hours of video across more than 50 EHS subject areas, learning exercises and challenge quizzes, pre- and post-tests, 1,000+ practice questions you can filter by blueprint domain, and a timed simulated exam you can repeat. Access runs six months, extendable in 3-month packages, and a failed candidate may get up to six more months free.

Best for:Employer-funded candidates who want BCSP-built material mapped directly to the four blueprint domains

Watch out:examCORE is developed separately from the exam and contains no real exam questions; at $999 it costs more than double the exam fees.

GUIDED COURSELive review course (Bowen EHS or SPAN)
$745-$9503 days to 3 weeks

Instructor-led reviews from safety-training firms. Bowen EHS's CHST Online Review is 15 hours of live evening lectures with recordings, homework quizzes and a practice-question toolkit ($795, or $745 with early payment). ClickSafety's SPAN team runs a 3-day workshop, in person or virtual, that includes its workbook and a year of online practice exams ($950).

Best for:Field people who have been out of a classroom for years and want an instructor to drill the blueprint with them

Watch out:Sessions run only a few times a year, so you study on their calendar; practice questions are provider-written, not BCSP's.

SELF-STUDYBlueprint + OSHA 1926 + one practice source
$250-$2752-3 months

Plan from BCSP's free blueprint and reference list, use OSHA's construction standards (29 CFR 1926) as the core text, and add one practice source: the exam bundle's BCSP Self-Assessment (+$250 over a single exam, which also buys a second attempt) or ClickSafety's SPAN Online Prep ($275 for a year).

Best for:Site safety staff who apply OSHA 1926 daily and mainly need question practice and gap-filling

Watch out:BCSP's reference list is long and mostly paid textbooks; borrow or use library copies rather than buying the whole list.

FAQ

Do I need OSHA 30 or a course to sit the CHST?

No. CHST eligibility is experience only: three years in construction safety where at least 35% of your duties required technical safety, health and environmental skills and knowledge. No degree, OSHA 30 card or prep course is required. BCSP's STS and STSC credentials do carry a 30-hour safety training requirement, which may be where the confusion comes from.

How much does the CHST cost in total?

BCSP's current list: a $140 application fee and a $300 exam fee, or $426 when you buy both together. The exam bundle is $550 ($676 with the application) and includes two attempts and a Self-Assessment. Keeping the credential costs a $150 annual renewal fee, and you need 20 recertification points every five years, including 0.5 points from ethics.

Is BCSP examCORE worth $999?

It is the most complete CHST-specific course: 25 hours of video, more than 1,000 practice questions sorted by blueprint domain, a repeatable timed exam, and six months of access with a possible free extension if you fail. It does not contain real exam questions. If your employer pays, it is a strong choice; out of pocket, a $275 question bank plus the free OSHA standards covers much of the same ground.

How long do I have to pass after BCSP approves me?

One year from application approval. You schedule through your BCSP profile at a Pearson test center, and a retake must be at least six weeks after your previous attempt. If you are within 60 days of your deadline, BCSP sells a one-time $100 eligibility extension that is valid for one more year.

What should I study first for the CHST?

Start with Domain 1, hazard and risk identification and control, at 36.6% of the exam: fall protection, excavations, electrical, cranes and rigging, confined spaces, silica and other health hazards. Then cover safety program development (22.5%), leadership, communication and training (21%), and emergency preparedness, incident investigation and response (19.9%).
