SIE study plan 2026 - 6-week calendar

Most SIE candidates are college students, career changers and new broker-dealer hires who need it before a representative exam such as the Series 7. Anyone 18 or older can enroll and pay the $100 fee without a firm sponsor, and a pass stays valid for four years, so the timing is usually yours to choose.

What makes the SIE different to plan for is breadth over depth: 80 items in 1 hour 45 minutes, 33 of the 75 scored items on products and their risks, and far more vocabulary than calculation. The plan below runs six weeks at about 10 hours a week, follows FINRA's outline order, gives products the largest share of study time and starts timed mocks at the end of week 4.

The 6-week SIE calendar

Who it fits: A student or full-time worker, new to the industry but comfortable with basic finance terms, who can study about 75 minutes on four weeknights, 3 hours on Saturday and 2 hours on Sunday.

Weeks 1 to 4 follow FINRA's outline order with four 75-minute weeknight sessions, Friday off and the long blocks on the weekend. Timed mocks start at the end of week 4 with FINRA's own practice test, Mocks 2 to 4 come from your course provider, and week 6 alternates full mocks with error-log reviews before a rest day.

  • DDrill · Timed practice questions by domain
  • RReview · Error log and spaced recall
  • MMock · Full-length timed practice exam
  • XRest · Nothing scheduled

What each week has to deliver

A week is done when its exit check passes, not when the calendar says so. If a check fails, repeat that week's drill days before moving on.

WeekFocusExit check
1Regulators, markets and the economyScore 70% or better on an untimed 40-question set mixing Capital Markets and Regulatory Framework items.
2Stocks, bonds and munisExplain the price-yield relationship and the main bond types from memory, and score 70% on a 50-question equity and debt set.
3Funds, packaged products and optionsScore 70% on a mixed 60-question products set covering funds, annuities, DPPs, REITs and options.
4Trading, accounts and Mock 1Finish section 3 of the outline and score 72% or better on Mock 1 (FINRA's practice test, self-timed to 1h45m).
5Close the gaps, Mock 2Log every Mock 1 miss by outline section and score 77% or better on Mock 2.
6Final mocks and taperHold 77% or better on Mocks 3 and 4, then take the day before the exam off.

Where the hours go

Weights and item counts (12, 33, 23 and 7 of 75 scored items) are from FINRA's Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Examination Content Outline, 2025 edition (posted October 2025), the version linked from FINRA's SIE page in October 2026.

Products gets about 45% of the learn-and-drill time (weeks 2 and 3 plus a week-5 re-drill), in line with its 44% weight because it carries the most new vocabulary. The Regulatory Framework section is paired with Capital Markets in week 1 because both cover who regulates what. That leaves Trading, Customer Accounts and Prohibited Activities a little under its 31% in new-learning time, which week 5's targeted drills make up.

Study time is the share of the plan's learn and drill hours, set from the published weight and nudged up for heavier domains and down for lighter ones.

Three checkpoints before you book

The calendar is a forecast. These checkpoints are the measurement: each one has a target and a fallback if you miss it.

  1. End of week 270%

Untimed drill score on Capital Markets, Regulatory Framework and equity and debt questions

If you miss it: Hold off on funds and options for two sessions, redo every missed question from the error log and re-read only the outline topics behind them.

  2. End of week 472%

    Mock 1: FINRA's free 75-question practice test, self-timed to 1h45m

If you miss it: This is the last point to move the exam while it is still about 10 business days away and free to reschedule; push it one to two weeks and repeat week 3's product drills.

  3. End of week 577%

Mock 2 score (with Mock 1 at 72% or better), measured against FINRA's scaled passing score of 70

If you miss it: Postpone rather than sit: a reschedule inside 10 business days carries a fee, but a failed attempt costs the full $100 again plus a 15-day wait.

Run the drill and mock days on ExamCert AI

The D and M cells in the calendar need exam-style questions with explanations. ExamCert AI has SIE questions organised by the same outline, so the drill days stay on the domain the calendar names and your checkpoint scores mean something.

What one study session looks like

Most weekday cells in the calendar are one session of about 75 minutes. Split it like this so every session ends with questions, not just reading:

10m
30mLearn
25mDrill
10m
  • Recall (10 min). Flashcards built from yesterday's misses: terms, dollar thresholds and filing deadlines.
  • Learn (30 min). One outline topic (for example 2.1.2 Debt Instruments) from your textbook, with notes keyed to the outline number.
  • Drill (25 min). 20 to 25 questions on that topic only, untimed on the first pass.
  • Error log (10 min). For each miss, write the rule or term that would have answered it and tag it with its outline section.

Pick your pace

Achievable reports its SIE users averaged 57 hours (the largest group logged 50 to 75) and suggests aiming for about 60, while STC puts the typical need at 70 to 80 hours. Six weeks at about 10 hours gives roughly 58 hours; if you are completely new to finance, use the Steady variant instead.

Fast track

3weeks
20 h/week · ≈ 60 h

Students on a break or new hires given study time who can put in about 3 hours a day.

Trade-off: Little spacing between topics, so product details fade faster, and one weak mock leaves no room to recover before the exam.

Standard

6weeks
10 h/week · ≈ 60 h

Most first-time candidates studying around a job or a full course load.

Trade-off: Six weeks of steady evenings; it only works if Friday stays the single night off.

Steady

9weeks
7 h/week · ≈ 63 h

Students mid-semester, parents, or anyone new to finance with about an hour a night.

Trade-off: Material from the first three weeks fades by the mock weeks, so a weekly recall block is required; enroll after week 2 so the 120-day enrollment window comfortably covers the plan.

SIE study-plan mistakes

  1. Giving the four sections equal time. Products and Their Risks is 33 of the 75 scored items while the Regulatory Framework section is 7, so a week-per-section plan is mis-weighted from the start.
  2. Assuming the SIE is all common sense. FINRA's outline says it tests rule-based knowledge too, so dollar thresholds and deadlines (currency transaction reports over $10,000, Form U5 within 30 days of termination) need flashcards, not intuition.
  3. Reading the FINRA practice test score as a forecast. FINRA says it is not a prediction of your result; treat it as one mock among several and judge readiness on your last two full mocks.
  4. Enrolling long before you start studying. FINRA gives you 120 days from enrollment to test, so a student who enrolls at the start of a busy semester can watch the window close.
  5. Taking the SIE years ahead of a job. A pass is valid for four years, and if you are not registered with a firm within that time you have to sit it again.

The final week, day by day

  1. T-7
Confirm the Prometric appointment and whether it is at a test center or online. For online testing, run Prometric's ProProctor system check on the exact computer and network you will use, and make sure the name on your ID matches your enrollment exactly.
  2. T-5
Review yesterday's Mock 3 item by item and turn each miss into a flashcard. No new books or question banks from this point.
  3. T-3
Review Mock 4 the same way, then stop adding material; only the error log and flashcards from here.
  4. T-1
Rest day. Pack one valid, unexpired government-issued ID with photo and signature. Online testers: clear the desk, since personal calculators and scratch paper are not allowed (an onscreen calculator and notepad are provided).
  5. T-0
Log in or arrive 30 minutes early for check-in. Budget about 79 seconds per item across 80 items; the 5 unscored pretest items are not marked, so answer every question, as there is no penalty for guessing.

Book it when the third checkpoint passes

Two full mocks above your target is the signal. Run them on ExamCert AI, review every miss, and book the SIE while the material is fresh.

FAQ

How long should I study for the SIE?

Prep providers put it at roughly 50 to 80 hours. Achievable reports its users averaged 57 hours and suggests aiming for about 60, while STC says candidates typically need 70 to 80. This plan uses about 58 hours over six weeks at 10 hours a week. Finance or economics majors can often trim a week; career changers with no market background should add weeks.

Can I pass the SIE in 2 weeks?

It is possible if you already know basic finance and can study about 30 hours a week, but it leaves no room for a weak mock. The exam is 80 items in 1 hour 45 minutes, with 33 scored items on products alone. A failed attempt means a 15-day wait and another $100 fee, so three weeks is a safer floor for a fast track.

Is the SIE harder than the Series 7?

No. The SIE is the introductory exam: 75 scored questions in 1 hour 45 minutes with a passing score of 70. The Series 7 has 125 scored questions over 3 hours 45 minutes, needs a 72, and goes much deeper into options strategies, margin math and suitability. Knopman Marks, for example, tells Series 7 candidates to plan on 100 to 125 hours.

Do I need a firm to sponsor me for the SIE?

No. Anyone 18 or older can create a FINRA account, enroll, pay the $100 fee and test at a Prometric center or online. The result is valid for four years. You only need a sponsoring member firm for the representative exam that follows, such as the Series 7, and you must pass both to register.

What happens if I fail the SIE?

You can retake it 15 calendar days after the failed attempt. If you fail three times in a row within two years, the wait becomes 60 days. Each attempt needs a new enrollment and the $100 fee. Use the gap to rebuild the plan around your weakest mock sections and take two fresh full mocks before rebooking.
