Series 65 study plan 2026 - 6-week calendar

The Series 65 is the NASAA exam states use to qualify investment adviser representatives. It draws people moving into fee-based advice: brokers adding advisory work, RIA staff, planners and career changers. FINRA delivers it, and you can enroll yourself without a sponsoring firm.

Planning for it differs from FINRA product exams. Sixty percent of the scored items sit in two equal blocks: client recommendations and strategies, and laws, regulations and ethics. Law questions turn on exact definitions under the Uniform Securities Act and the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, so they reward spaced recall, not last-minute cramming. The plan below runs 6 weeks at about 12 hours a week, covers economics and investment vehicles first, spends the second half on law and ethics, and uses three timed 180-minute mocks to confirm you clear the 92-of-130 mark with margin.

Retake waiting period changes January 4, 2027NASAA approved a shorter wait after a third failed attempt on the Series 63, 65 and 66: 60 days instead of 180, effective January 4, 2027. Waits after the first and second attempts stay at 30 days.

The 6-week Series 65 calendar

Who it fits: A working adult with general finance knowledge but no securities license who can study 90 minutes on weeknights and about 4 hours on Saturday.

Weekdays are 90- to 120-minute sessions and Saturday is either a long drill block or a 180-minute mock taken at the real 140-question pace, with Sunday off. Investment knowledge comes first (weeks 1-3), law and ethics fill weeks 4-5, and the final week is one more mock, error-log repair and a two-day taper.

Each cell is one day: the session type, the planned minutes and what to cover. The bar along the bottom of a cell is that day's load against the heaviest day in the plan.

What each week has to deliver

A week is done when its exit check passes, not when the calendar says so. If a check fails, repeat that week's drill days before moving on.

WeekFocusExit check
1Economics and quantitative methodsScore 70%+ on a 40-question Economic Factors quiz and name each risk type with a one-line example.
2Investment vehicle characteristicsScore 70%+ on mixed Investment Vehicle quizzes, including bond yield and valuation items.
3Client recommendations and strategiesScore 70%+ on a 50-question Client Recommendations set, including Sharpe ratio, alpha and tax items.
4Law I: state and federal securities lawScore 75%+ on law quizzes covering USA definitions and state vs SEC registration, then finish mock 1.
5Law II: ethics and fiduciary dutyScore 75%+ on unethical-practices and fiduciary quizzes and 78%+ on mock 2.
6Final mock, repair and taperScore 78%+ on mock 3, clear every open error-log item and arrive rested.

Where the hours go

Weights are from NASAA's Series 65 Test Specifications, effective June 12, 2023 (20, 32, 39 and 39 of the 130 scored questions).

The weights come in two pairs: 15/25 for the investment-knowledge sections and 30/30 for client recommendations and law. Law gets the most dedicated time (two weeks) even though it ties Client Recommendations at 30%, because statutory definitions and exclusions are pure recall that fades fastest and should sit closest to exam day. Economic Factors gets the least new-learning time, but its formulas come back in the performance-measure drills and every mock.

Study time is the share of the plan's learn and drill hours, set from the published weight and nudged up for heavier domains and down for lighter ones.

Three checkpoints before you book

The calendar is a forecast. These checkpoints are the measurement: each one has a target and a fallback if you miss it.

  1. End of week 270%

Average score on fresh Economic Factors and Investment Vehicle quiz questions you have not seen before.

If you miss it: Use week 3's Friday drill block for the weaker of the two sections and keep a 30-minute mixed set in every week 3 session.

  2. End of week 472%

Mock 1 total score, with the Laws, Regulations, and Guidelines section scored on its own.

If you miss it: If law is the gap, swap week 5's mixed drill day for a second law drill day; if investments are the gap, add a 40-question Client Recommendations set to each week 5 weekday.

  3. End of week 578%

Mock 2 score (go/no-go): about 7 points above the 70.8% pass mark, with no section below 70%.

If you miss it: Move the appointment back 1-2 weeks through Prometric before its rescheduling cutoff and repeat week 5's pattern on the weakest section.

Run the drill and mock days on ExamCert AI

The D and M cells in the calendar need exam-style questions with explanations. ExamCert AI has Series 65 questions organised by the same outline, so the drill days stay on the domain the calendar names and your checkpoint scores mean something.

What one study session looks like

Most weekday cells in the calendar are one session of about 90 minutes. Split it like this so every session ends with questions, not just reading:

10m
35mLearn
30mDrill
15mError log
  • Recall (10 min). Closed-book recall of yesterday's definitions or formulas, such as USA exclusions or the Sharpe ratio.
  • Learn (35 min). One outline subtopic from your textbook or course, with a one-page summary in your own words.
  • Drill (30 min). 20-25 questions on today's subtopic at about 77 seconds each, the real exam pace.
  • Error log (15 min). Log every miss with the rule or formula behind it and tag it by outline section.

Pick your pace

Prep providers commonly cite 50-100 hours for the Series 65 (Achievable suggests 50-80 at a moderate pace; STC says at least 40-50). Six weeks at about 12 hours gives roughly 70 hours, mid-range, with room for three full mocks.

Fast track

3weeks
24 h/week · ≈ 72 h

Candidates who already hold the SIE or Series 7, or work in advisory operations and know the products.

Trade-off: About 70 hours packed into three weeks; law rules get little spaced review and one weak mock leaves no slack before exam day.

Standard

6weeks
12 h/week · ≈ 72 h

A working adult with general finance knowledge and no securities license.

Trade-off: Needs steady weeknight discipline; one lost week usually means moving the exam date.

Steady

10weeks
8 h/week · ≈ 80 h

Career changers or parents who can give about an hour on weekdays plus one weekend block.

Trade-off: A long gap between learning economics and the exam; keep a weekly mixed set or early sections fade.

Series 65 study-plan mistakes

  1. Treating it as an investments exam. Laws, Regulations, and Guidelines is 30% of the scored items (39 of 130), tied with Client Recommendations, and candidates with markets backgrounds often under-drill the rule detail that decides the result.
  2. Blurring state and federal jurisdiction. The Uniform Securities Act and the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 define advisers and exclusions differently, and many questions hinge on which regulator applies and which assets-under-management thresholds move an adviser from state to SEC registration.
  3. Mixing up exclusions and exemptions. Being excluded from a definition is not the same as being exempt from registration, and exempt securities are not exempt transactions; wrong answers are built by swapping these terms, so drill them as a two-column table.
  4. Treating fiduciary duty as a general ethics idea. NASAA's model rule lists specific prohibited practices, such as borrowing from clients, unauthorized trading and misleading advertising; learn the list item by item.
  5. Skipping timed practice. 140 items in 180 minutes is about 77 seconds each, and the 10 pretest items are unmarked, so every question has to be treated as scored.

The final week, day by day

  1. T-7
Confirm your Prometric appointment date, time and test center address, and check that the name on your FINRA enrollment matches your government-issued photo ID exactly; fix any mismatch now.
  2. T-5
Take mock 3: 140 questions in 180 minutes with no pauses. Score each of the four sections and log every miss with the rule or formula behind it.
  3. T-3
Law rapid-fire: USA definitions, exclusions vs exemptions, state vs SEC registration and NASAA's unethical-practices list. Drill only; no new chapters.
  4. T-1
Rest. Lay out your photo ID and appointment confirmation. Phones and other personal items, including your own calculator, go in a locker; use only what the test center provides.
  5. T-0
Arrive about 30 minutes early for check-in. Pace at roughly 77 seconds per question, so you reach question 70 with about 90 minutes left, and answer every item.

Book it when the third checkpoint passes

Two full mocks above your target is the signal. Run them on ExamCert AI, review every miss, and book the Series 65 while the material is fresh.

FAQ

How many questions are on the Series 65 and what score do you need to pass?

The exam has 140 multiple-choice questions and a 180-minute limit. 130 are scored and 10 are unscored pretest items mixed in so you cannot spot them. You must answer at least 92 of the 130 scored questions correctly, about 70.8%. FINRA administers the exam for NASAA, and the fee is $187.

How long should I study for the Series 65?

Prep providers commonly suggest 50 to 100 hours depending on background; Achievable quotes 50-80 hours at a moderate pace and STC at least 40-50 hours. This plan schedules about 70 hours over 6 weeks. Candidates who already hold the SIE or Series 7 can often compress to about 3 weeks, while career changers usually need 8-10.

Do I need a firm to sponsor me for the Series 65?

No. FINRA lists no prerequisites or corequisites for the Series 65. NASAA notes that a firm can enroll you by filing Form U4, or you can open an enrollment window yourself through FINRA.org and pay the $187 fee, so you can sit for it before joining a firm.

How long do I have to wait to retake the Series 65?

Under current NASAA policy you wait 30 days after a first or second failed attempt and 180 days after a third or later failure. NASAA has approved a change, effective January 4, 2027, that cuts the wait after a third failure to 60 days; the 30-day waits stay the same. Each retake means enrolling and paying again.

Can I take the Series 65 online?

Generally no. FINRA states the Series 65 is available online only for candidates who require a testing accommodation, so most people sit at a Prometric test center. Plan your route, arrive about 30 minutes early with government-issued photo ID, and expect to leave personal items, including your phone, in a locker.
