The SHRM-CP is SHRM's credential for HR professionals working at the operational level: generalists, specialists and HR points of contact who implement policy and run day-to-day HR work. SHRM sets no degree or HR-experience requirement, so candidates range from career changers to HR staff with several years in the job.
Planning for it differs from a law-and-facts exam because 40% of items are situational judgment questions that ask for the best action under the 2026 SHRM BASK, not your employer's habit, and testing happens only in two fixed windows at Prometric centers. The 12-week plan below covers the three knowledge domains first, then the three behavioral clusters with weekly situational drills, and finishes with four full 220-minute mocks.
The 12-week SHRM-CP calendar
Who it fits: An HR generalist or specialist working full time with basic HR experience, studying about an hour on four weekday evenings plus a longer weekend block.
Weeks 1-6 cover the three knowledge domains and weeks 6-9 the behavioral clusters, with a 220-minute mock in weeks 7, 10, 11 and 12 to match SHRM's two 110-minute sections. Friday is always rest and Saturday holds the long block, so three of the four mocks fall on a weekend.

Each cell is one day: the session type, the planned minutes and what to cover. The bar along the bottom of a cell is that day's load against the heaviest day in the plan.
What each week has to deliver
A week is done when its exit check passes, not when the calendar says so. If a check fails, repeat that week's drill days before moving on.
| Week | Focus | Exit check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Diagnostic + People: strategy, TA | A diagnostic of about 50 mixed items is done and every miss is logged by BASK area and item type. |
| 2 | People: engagement, L&D, rewards | Score 65% or better on a 60-item People domain set. |
| 3 | Organization: structure, OED, WFM | Score 65% on a 50-item Organization set covering HR structure, OED and workforce management. |
| 4 | Organization: ER and HR technology | Score 65% on a 100-item mixed People and Organization knowledge set (gate 1). |
| 5 | Workplace: U.S. law and risk | Score 70% on a 50-item employment-law set without notes. |
| 6 | Workplace wrap + Leadership start | Workplace notes complete and 65% on a 40-item Leadership situational judgment set. |
| 7 | Leadership cluster + mock 1 | Mock 1 completed under real timing (two 110-minute sections) with 65% or better (gate 2). |
| 8 | Business: acumen and analytics | Score 70% on HR metrics calculation items and 65% on Business situational sets. |
| 9 | Consultation + Interpersonal | Score 65% or better on a 60-item situational judgment set spanning all three clusters. |
| 10 | Mock 2 + weak-area repair | Mock 2 at 72% or better with no cluster or domain below 60%. |
| 11 | Mock 3 + go/no-go check | Average of mocks 2 and 3 at 75% or better with no cluster or domain below 65% (go/no-go). |
| 12 | Final mock, review, taper | Final mock at 75% or better, error log read once end to end, and Prometric details confirmed. |
Where the hours go
Weights come from the Exam Composition chart in SHRM's 2026 Certification Handbook, which also splits items by type: 40% situational judgment, 10% foundational knowledge and 50% HR-specific knowledge.
The three knowledge domains come first (weeks 1-6) because they hold half the items and supply the facts the scenarios assume. The behavioral clusters, which are tested mostly through situational judgment, get weeks 6-9 plus SJ drill blocks through week 11. Workplace gets a full week despite its 13% weight because U.S. employment law is recall you can't reason your way to.
Study time is the share of the plan's learn and drill hours, set from the published weight and nudged up for heavier domains and down for lighter ones.
Leadership ClusterHeavy
≈ 12 hMostly situational judgment items where several answers are defensible, and Inclusive Mindset is new in the 2026 BASK, so older prep materials don't match it.
Business ClusterHeavy
≈ 11 hMixes HR metrics and data interpretation with consulting scenarios, which is where candidates without analytics or finance exposure lose points.
Interpersonal ClusterStandard
≈ 7 hConflict, negotiation and communication scenarios feel familiar, which makes it easy to answer from habit instead of the behaviors the BASK describes.
People Knowledge DomainStandard
≈ 9 hBroad but familiar to most generalists; the work is filling gaps in areas you don't touch daily, such as total rewards design or L&D evaluation.
Organization Knowledge DomainStandard
≈ 9 hConcept-heavy (OD models, workforce planning, labor relations, HR technology), and the 2026 BASK added AI examples across HR content.
Workplace Knowledge DomainHeavy
≈ 8 hLowest weight but the most pure memorization: U.S. employment law rules and thresholds, plus global workforce and CSR topics many U.S. candidates never handle.
Three checkpoints before you book
The calendar is a forecast. These checkpoints are the measurement: each one has a target and a fallback if you miss it.
- End of week 465%
Score on a 100-item mixed People and Organization knowledge set, taken timed.
If you miss it: Before starting Workplace law, spend week 5's Saturday block and 30 extra minutes each weekday on your two lowest functional areas.
- End of week 765% on mock 1
Overall mock 1 score, split into situational judgment versus knowledge items.
If you miss it: If SJ is the drag, make every weekday drill SJ-only and write why each wrong option loses; if knowledge is the drag, re-read the BASK proficiency indicators for your weakest domain.
- End of week 1175% on 2 mocks
Average of mocks 2 and 3, with no cluster or domain under 65%.
If you miss it: SHRM publishes no raw cut score (pass is 200 on 120-200), so keep this margin: reschedule later in the window at least 5 days out ($45-$60 per the 2026 handbook) or transfer to the next window ($150) and repeat weeks 10-11.
Run the drill and mock days on ExamCert AI
The D and M cells in the calendar need exam-style questions with explanations. ExamCert AI has SHRM-CP questions organised by the same outline, so the drill days stay on the domain the calendar names and your checkpoint scores mean something.
Practise SHRM-CP on ExamCert AIFree SHRM-CP practice testWhat one study session looks like
Most weekday cells in the calendar are one session of about 60 minutes. Split it like this so every session ends with questions, not just reading:
- Recall (10 min). Answer 10 flashcards from earlier weeks' error log without notes.
- Learn (25 min). Read one BASK functional area or competency, noting its proficiency indicators for all HR professionals.
- Drill (15 min). Do 12-15 timed questions on the day's topic, at least half situational judgment from week 6 on.
- Log (10 min). For each miss, write why SHRM's best answer beats yours and tag it by cluster or domain.
Pick your pace
UNC Charlotte's HR certification prep program cites SHRM research that most passing SHRM-CP candidates studied 41 to 120 hours and suggests planning at least 60; 12 weeks at about 8 hours lands near 95 hours, inside that range, with room for four full mocks.
Fast track
Experienced generalists who already know U.S. employment law and applied late in a window.
Trade-off: About two hours a day, little spacing between topics, and room for only two full mocks.
Standard
Most full-time HR staff who apply at the early-bird or standard deadline and test mid-window.
Trade-off: Needs four weekday evenings plus a long weekend block every week for three months.
Steady
Candidates with heavy workloads or little exposure to the Business and Workplace content, starting soon after applications open.
Trade-off: Early material fades over four months, so the weekly recall block can't be skipped; the window start date fixes your latest start week.
The SHRM-CP you are planning for
| Questions | 134 multiple-choice items (110 scored + 24 unscored field-test): 80 knowledge items and 54 situational judgment items. The field-test items are mixed in and indistinguishable from scored ones. |
| Time | 3 hours 40 minutes of testing in two separately timed 110-minute sections; unused Section 1 time does not carry over and you cannot return to it. Plan on about 4 hours at the center. |
| Passing standard | Scaled score of 200 on a 120-200 scale, set with the Modified Angoff method; every passing candidate is reported as 200. No raw percentage is published. |
| Fee | Dec. 2026-Feb. 2027 window: $399 SHRM member / $499 nonmember at the standard rate (Sept. 1-Dec. 24, 2026), including a $50 application fee and $49 standard-deadline fee. Early-bird rates (closed Aug. 31) were $350 / $450. |
| Delivery | Computer-based, in person only at Prometric test centers (no remote proctoring in 2026), in two windows a year: May 1-July 15 and Dec. 1-Feb. 15. |
| If you fail | No retest in the same window. Reapply as a new candidate for a later window and pay the full fee again; SHRM sets no limit on attempts. |

SHRM-CP study-plan mistakes
- Studying only knowledge content. Situational judgment items are 40% of the exam and reward the best action per the BASK, so drill them weekly from week 6, not just in the last fortnight.
- Using pre-2026 materials. The 2026 BASK merged Inclusion & Diversity and Global Mindset into Inclusive Mindset and added AI examples, and the handbook now weights Interpersonal at 13.5%, so old outlines misallocate your hours.
- Answering scenarios the way your company does it. The keyed answer follows the BASK's proficiency indicators; log every SJ miss with the reason the best answer wins.
- Waiting to book Prometric. Seats fill during each window, and a candidate who can't get an appointment forfeits all fees, so schedule as soon as the Authorization to Test letter arrives.
- Skipping full-length practice. The two 110-minute sections are timed separately and Section 1 is closed once you leave it, so pacing only settles after two or three 220-minute mocks.
The final week, day by day
- T-7
Confirm your Prometric appointment at prometric.com/shrm. Per the 2026 handbook, changes cost $45 more than 30 days out and $60 at 29 to 5 days, and nothing can be moved inside 5 days. - T-5
Check that the name on your Authorization to Test letter matches your unexpired government-issued photo ID exactly; bring a secondary ID if the primary lacks a photo or signature. - T-3
Review the final mock's misses by item type and reread the BASK glossary terms you logged; no new material from here. - T-1
Light recall only. Plan to arrive early: arriving more than 30 minutes late or without proper ID counts as a no-show and forfeits all fees. - T-0
Expect lockers, pocket checks and wanding at check-in, then about 4 hours at the center. You get a preliminary pass or did-not-pass on screen; official results reach your SHRM Certification Portal in about 2-3 weeks.
Book it when the third checkpoint passes
Two full mocks above your target is the signal. Run them on ExamCert AI, review every miss, and book the SHRM-CP while the material is fresh.

How many questions are on the SHRM-CP exam?
SHRM's 2026 handbook lists 134 multiple-choice items: 80 knowledge items, including foundational knowledge items on the behavioral competencies, and 54 situational judgment items. 24 of the 134 are unscored field-test items, so 110 count, and you can't tell which is which. You get two separately timed 110-minute sections, 3 hours 40 minutes in total, and you cannot return to Section 1 once you leave it.
What score do you need to pass the SHRM-CP?
Scores are reported on a scaled range of 120 to 200, and the passing score is 200; every candidate who passes is reported as 200. SHRM sets the standard with the Modified Angoff method and does not publish the raw percentage needed. You see a preliminary pass or did-not-pass at the test center and get official results in the SHRM Certification Portal about two to three weeks later.
How much does the SHRM-CP cost in 2026?
For the Dec. 1, 2026 to Feb. 15, 2027 window, the standard rate is $399 for SHRM members and $499 for nonmembers through Dec. 24, 2026. Both include a $50 nonrefundable application fee and a $49 standard-deadline fee. Early-bird rates of $350 and $450 took effect June 3, 2026 and closed Aug. 31. Member pricing requires membership at the time you apply.
Can I take the SHRM-CP online or any time of year?
No. SHRM's 2026 handbook and fee page list in-person testing at Prometric test centers only, with no remote proctoring, and only in two windows: May 1 to July 15 and Dec. 1 to Feb. 15. Schedule at prometric.com/shrm as soon as your Authorization to Test letter arrives, because candidates who can't get an appointment forfeit their fees.
How many hours should I study for the SHRM-CP?
UNC Charlotte's HR certification prep program cites SHRM research showing most passing SHRM-CP and PHR candidates studied 41 to 120 hours, and it suggests planning at least 60. The standard plan here is 12 weeks at about 8 hours a week, roughly 95 hours including four 220-minute mocks. Experienced generalists can compress it to 6 weeks at 15 hours.
