The ServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA) is the foundation credential for anyone who configures and maintains a ServiceNow instance: new administrators, ITSM process owners, developers heading for CAD and the implementation specialist exams, and partner consultants. There are no prerequisites. ServiceNow recommends its Welcome to ServiceNow and ServiceNow Administration Fundamentals courses and three to six months of hands-on instance experience.
Ready for CSA means you have done the work in an instance, not just read about it. Database Management and Platform Security alone is 30% of the January 2026 blueprint, and its questions on tables, access controls, imports and the CMDB punish anyone who has never configured them. The exam gives you 60 questions in 90 minutes with no partial credit on multiple-select items. If you can perform the items below in a personal developer instance without searching the docs, book it.
How to use this checklist
Tick only what you can do today, without notes. Each tick is weighted by its domain's share of the official outline, so the score follows the exam, not the number of boxes. A heavy domain (15%+ of the weight) at NO-GO holds the verdict even when the total looks fine. Your ticks are saved in this browser only.
The ServiceNow CSA readiness checklist
24 items across 6 domains, each one a thing the exam expects you to do rather than recognise.
Your go / no-go board
One lamp per domain, one verdict overall. Amber and red rows are your study plan for the next week or two.
Check your ticks under exam conditions
A tick is a claim; a timed set of questions is the evidence. ExamCert AI has 400+ exam-style ServiceNow CSA questions with an explanation for every option. Do a mixed set and see whether the domains you ticked hold up.

Any one of these on the ServiceNow CSA is a better predictor of a fail than a low tick count.
You have never built anything in an instance
The blueprint expects three to six months of hands-on use, and the questions describe configuration tasks: forms, catalog items, flows, ACLs, import sets. Reading about them leaves you guessing between two real menu options.
Fix:Request a free personal developer instance from the ServiceNow Developer Program and do every item on this page in it, twice.
Your notes come from dumps or old blueprints
ServiceNow says questions come from its official training and product documentation and that study material posted elsewhere online is not official. The January 2026 blueprint names Workflow Studio, Platform Analytics, Security Center and the shared responsibility model, and sets Instance Configuration at 10% and Data Migration and Integration at 13%.
Fix:Study from the current blueprint, the Administration Fundamentals course and product documentation, and drop older question banks.
ACLs and imports are still fuzzy
Database Management and Platform Security is 30% of the exam, the largest domain by a wide margin. It covers the data schema, access control, importing data and the CMDB.
Fix:Write a table ACL and a field ACL in your instance and test them by impersonating users, then import the same file twice with and without coalesce.
You would register before you are ready
In ServiceNow University, registering means paying, fees are non-refundable, and you must sit the exam within 90 days. Once an appointment is booked there is no cancellation, only rescheduling, and the January 2027 testing pause can shrink your window.
Fix:Register only when you can name an exam date within the next few weeks, and check that it avoids the January pause.
UI policies, client scripts and business rules blur together
Data Migration and Integration (13%) covers UI policies, business rules, update sets and scripting, and many questions turn on choosing the right one for a requirement.
Fix:Make the same field mandatory three ways in your instance and note where each runs and when it fires.
The numbers that say you're ready
Rules of thumb, not official thresholds: ServiceNow does not publish a readiness score. Hit all four before you pay for a booking.
Rule of thumb, not a ServiceNow figure. ServiceNow's official practice exams come through MeasureUp; the real cut score is unpublished and not always 70%, so leave a margin.
Rule of thumb. Database Management and Platform Security is 30% of the exam, so a gap there outweighs strength in the 7% and 10% domains.
Rule of thumb. Building a catalog item with variables and a Workflow Studio flow with an approval from scratch in half an hour shows the hands-on fluency the scenarios assume.
Rule of thumb. A first pass in about 75 of the 90 minutes leaves time to recheck multiple-select items, which score nothing unless every correct option is chosen.
Booking and ID checklist
The logistics that trip people up are specific to the ServiceNow CSA and its delivery provider. Work through them in order.
Take the recommended training
ServiceNow recommends Welcome to ServiceNow and ServiceNow Administration Fundamentals. Completing training adds the CSA exam to My Exams, and instructor-led training includes one free exam attempt.
Request accommodations
Accommodations such as extra breaks or a beverage are requested through a ServiceNow University case. Some, including extra time and a separate room, need Pearson customer service and are test-centre only.
Register, which means paying
Pay US$300 by credit card or learning credits in ServiceNow University; company discounts may apply. Fees are non-refundable and you must schedule and complete the exam within 90 days.
Schedule with Pearson
From My Exams you are sent to Pearson to choose a test centre or OnVUE online proctoring and a date. Avoid the January 2027 testing pause.
Check ID and OnVUE setup
Test centres need one original government ID with name, photo and signature, issued by the country you test in, or a passport if you test abroad. OnVUE needs a matching government photo ID and a passed system check.
Test-centre reschedule deadline
Test-centre appointments can be rescheduled until 48 hours before. There is no cancellation option once booked, and missing the exam forfeits the fee. ServiceNow's guide lets OnVUE appointments be moved up to 15 minutes after check-in time.
Check in early
Follow the instructions in your Pearson confirmation and check in early. Late arrival can forfeit the fee, and proctors cannot pause or extend your time for technical problems, so contact Pearson support straight away if one occurs.
Exam-week countdown: T-7 to T-0
Sit an official MeasureUp practice test or a full timed 60-question set, sort misses by blueprint domain and rebuild each weak feature in your developer instance.
Drill the 30% domain: ACL evaluation, an import with a transform map and coalesce, CMDB relationships and CSDM. Then review business rule timing and update sets.
No new topics. Check that your ID matches your registration name exactly, run the OnVUE system check or plan the route to the centre, clear your desk and sleep.
Allow about 90 seconds per question. Multiple-select items tell you how many answers to pick, so pick exactly that many. Flag and move on, and remember a pass is conditional until any review is complete.

Credly badge
Passing earns the Certified System Administrator certification and a verifiable Credly digital badge you can share on LinkedIn or in an email signature.
Delta exam and yearly fee
Keep CSA current with an annual maintenance (delta) exam: 6-20 questions, online and unproctored, taken in a 90-day window that next opens in January 2027. You also pay a yearly US$200 maintenance fee covering all your certifications; the 2027 fee applies to holders certified before 1 January 2026. Miss either and CSA expires.

Do I have to complete a course before the ServiceNow CSA exam?
No. ServiceNow's credentialing guide states that the CSA exam has no prerequisites. It strongly recommends the Welcome to ServiceNow and ServiceNow Administration Fundamentals courses, and finishing instructor-led training includes one free exam attempt. Without a course you register and pay US$300 in ServiceNow University. Three to six months of hands-on instance experience is the recommended background.
How many questions are on the CSA exam and what is the passing score?
The exam has 60 questions, single-answer multiple choice or multiple select, and you get 90 minutes. Each question is worth one point and multiple-select items give no partial credit. ServiceNow compares your total with a cut score it does not publish, re-evaluates it each release and says it is not always 70%.
Which CSA domains carry the most weight?
Under the January 2026 blueprint, Database Management and Platform Security is the largest domain at 30%. Configuring Applications for Collaboration and Self Service and Automation are 20% each, Data Migration and Integration is 13%, Instance Configuration is 10% and Platform Overview and Navigation is 7%. Plan your study time roughly in proportion.
What happens if I fail the CSA exam?
You can retake it three days after a first fail and 30 days after a second, then must wait 180 days between any further attempts. There is no limit on the number of attempts, but each one costs the full exam fee. Your result report shows the percentage correct per domain, so start with the lowest sections.
How do I keep my CSA certification current?
Pass the annual maintenance, or delta, exam during its 90-day window. It is short, online and unproctored, with 6 to 20 questions. You also pay a yearly US$200 Certification Maintenance Program fee covering all your ServiceNow certifications; the 2027 fee applies to holders certified before 1 January 2026. Miss either requirement and CSA expires, so you must pass the full exam again.
