Most CGEIT candidates should self-study. They are senior people with governance experience, ISACA writes the exam against its own Review Manual and question database, and both together cost members $408. Pay for a live course only if an employer funds it or you keep choosing operational answers over governance ones. A local chapter review course, where one runs, is the best value; commercial boot camps at $2,000-$4,000 add a deadline more than content.
CGEIT is ISACA's certification for people who govern enterprise IT rather than run it: CIOs, IT directors, portfolio and governance managers, and the consultants and auditors who advise boards. The exam is 150 multiple-choice questions in four hours, at a PSI test centre or online, and costs US$575 for ISACA members or US$760 for non-members.
The training market is smaller than for CISA or CISM. ISACA sells the official Review Manual and a questions database but offers no CGEIT online review course of its own. Live classes come from training companies and a few ISACA chapters, priced from about $300 for a chapter course to over $4,000 for a boot camp. Because candidates are senior and the exam tests judgment more than facts, most prepare from the manual and questions alone.
Is a course required for the CGEIT?
ISACA requires no course for CGEIT, and the exam is open to anyone. The requirement people mistake for a training rule is experience, and it applies only to certification: five years managing, advising on or overseeing IT governance across at least three of the four domains, including one year in Governance of Enterprise IT, earned within the 10 years before you apply. You pay a US$50 application fee after passing.
Cheapest credible way to prepare:Join ISACA (US$145 plus chapter dues): member prices take $185 off the exam, $30 off the Review Manual and $100 off the QAE database, which usually covers the dues. Add the free COBIT 2019 introduction and ISACA's free practice quiz.
Three ways to prepare
Costs below are training only. The exam fee ($575 / $760) is the same whichever route you take.
ISACA sells no CGEIT course of its own, so its official route is study material. The CGEIT Review Manual, 8th Edition, works through the four domains with self-assessment questions and a glossary. The Questions, Answers & Explanations database gives six months on ISACA's Perform platform: 300 questions, domain filters, flashcards and two full timed practice exams, with an explanation for every option.
Best for:Most candidates: it is the material ISACA writes the exam against, and members pay $408 for both items.
Watch out:300 questions go quickly if you drill hard, and ISACA says a new purchase will not extend an existing subscription.
A three- or four-day class led by an instructor who drills the governing-body mindset the exam rewards. Global Knowledge's three-day virtual class lists $2,247 with the QAE included. Infosec's four-day boot camp lists $4,199 with an exam voucher and a 12-month QAE subscription. Some ISACA chapters run far cheaper review courses spread over several weekends.
Best for:Employer-funded candidates, and technical managers who need help switching from operational answers to governance-level ones.
Watch out:Check whether the price includes the QAE, the voucher and the Review Manual. Prices outside the US are often in GBP or EUR plus VAT.
Read the CGEIT Review Manual against the free exam content outline, use the free COBIT 2019 Framework: Introduction and Methodology for governance vocabulary, take ISACA's free practice quiz, and drill an independent question bank. ISACA members can join the free CGEIT study group on ISACA Engage. Add the QAE database later if your practice scores stall.
Best for:Senior people on a budget who already sit on steering or portfolio committees and mainly need ISACA's vocabulary.
Watch out:Without the QAE you lose ISACA-written questions, the best guide to how the single best answer is phrased.

Does ISACA require a course for CGEIT?
No. The exam is open to anyone and no training is required. What is required is experience, and only for certification: five years across at least three of the four domains, including a year in Governance of Enterprise IT, within the 10 years before you apply. You can sit the exam first and apply for certification afterwards, paying the US$50 application fee.
Does ISACA sell an official CGEIT online course?
Not currently. ISACA's online review course catalogue lists courses for CISA, CISM, AAIA, AAISM, AAIR and CCOA, but none for CGEIT. Its official CGEIT prep is the Review Manual, 8th Edition ($139, or $109 for members), the six-month QAE database ($399, or $299) and a free practice quiz. Live courses come from training companies and ISACA chapters.
Is the CGEIT QAE database worth $299-$399?
For most candidates, yes. It is the only source of ISACA-written CGEIT questions: 300 items with explanations for every option, domain filters and two full timed practice exams, for six months. ISACA notes a new purchase will not extend an existing subscription, so start it when you are ready to drill, not on the day you begin reading.
Is ISACA membership worth it just for CGEIT?
Usually. Professional membership is US$145 a year plus chapter dues, and member pricing takes $185 off the exam, $30 off the Review Manual and $100 off the QAE database, $315 in all. It also opens the CGEIT study group on ISACA Engage and cuts the annual maintenance fee from US$85 to US$45 once you are certified.
How long does CGEIT self-study take?
ISACA publishes no figure, so treat any number as a rule of thumb. Experienced governance professionals often need 80 to 120 hours over two to three months: one pass through the Review Manual, then question practice focused on Governance of Enterprise IT, which carries 40% of the exam. Allow longer if your background is technical rather than governance.
