FSMTB MBLEx - Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination exam eligibility and requirements overview

What the MBLEx is

The Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) is run by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). Passing it is not a certification or credential of any kind: your result supports an application for a state license, and only your state board issues the license. It is also not something you can buy your way into — FSMTB decides whether you are allowed to sit the exam at all, and that decision is made before you ever see a question. Candidates who treat the application as a formality are the ones who lose a testing window to a paperwork problem.

The eligibility gates, in order

FSMTB checks these in sequence, and failing any one of them stops the application. Work through them top to bottom before you pay a fee.

Gate 1

Meet the requirements of the state board you intend to be licensed by: complete a state-approved massage program (500 to 1,000 hours, depending on the state) and have your school send education verification directly to FSMTB through the Education Verification Center (EVC).

Gate 2

Apply through FSMTB and pay the $265 fee. Once FSMTB issues your Authorization to Test (ATT), schedule at a Pearson VUE professional centre within its 120-day validity.

Current students can apply once they have completed education in every MBLEx content area and the school verifies it. Apprenticeship and international candidates must file a state license application first, which FSMTB confirms before approving them. There is no work-experience requirement.

A fixed-length computer-adaptive test: all 100 questions, answered in order with no skipping or going back, must be answered inside 110 minutes. Leave any unanswered and the attempt is scored as a fail with no diagnostic report. Offered in English and Spanish at Pearson VUE centres. Most regulated states accept it, but not all: New York and Hawaii use their own state exams, California has voluntary certification through CAMTC with no exam required, and Vermont registration needs no exam.

What it costs

The application fee is $265, nonrefundable and nontransferable, and every retake costs another $265. Pearson VUE charges $50 to cancel or reschedule within 60 days of the appointment, and sending your result to another state costs $40. Budget past that number: most candidates also pay for a review course or a question bank, and your state board charges its own license fee. The cheapest way to sit this exam once is to over-prepare for the first attempt.

How long the process takes

Three clocks run and candidates usually notice only two. The first is the education clock: 500 to 1,000 hours at an approved school, depending on your state, which takes several months to two years. FSMTB has no work-experience requirement. The second is the approval clock: once your school has verified your education through the EVC and your application is complete, FSMTB processes it within about 5 business days; an incomplete application expires after 6 months. The third is the eligibility window: your Authorization to Test is valid for 120 days, and if it expires before you test you must reapply and pay the fee again. After you test, your result goes to the state board you named within 5 business days.

Plan backwards from the date you want the credential in hand, not forwards from the day you decide to start. The paperwork is the part that is outside your control, so it should go first.

Why applications get sent back

The failure modes are boring and they repeat. A transcript sent by the candidate instead of education verification sent by the school through the EVC. A program that is not approved in the state where the school is located. A current student applying before finishing every MBLEx content area. An apprenticeship or international candidate with no state license application on file. An incomplete application left until it expires after 6 months. None of these are judgement calls you can argue your way past — they are checkboxes. Read the eligibility page as though it were a contract, because for the purposes of your application it is one.

Once you are approved, the work is question volume. Practise MBLEx questions free and find out where you actually stand before you book a date.

FAQ

Who is eligible to sit the MBLEx exam?

Graduates of an approved massage therapy program, and current students who have completed education in every MBLEx content area, once the school verifies that education directly with FSMTB through the Education Verification Center. Apprenticeship and international candidates must also have a state license application on file. There is no work-experience requirement.

How much does the MBLEx exam cost?

$265 per attempt, nonrefundable and nontransferable. Every retake costs another $265.

How many questions are on the MBLEx exam?

100 questions in 110 minutes. The MBLEx is computer-adaptive, questions are answered in order, and leaving any unanswered at the time limit is an automatic fail.

How long does MBLEx approval take?

FSMTB processes a complete application within about 5 business days, once your school has sent education verification through the Education Verification Center. Your Authorization to Test is then valid for 120 days, so book your Pearson VUE appointment inside that window.
