MBLEx Passing Score Explained: What a Pass Actually Takes

Pass/fail results, a computer-adaptive format and a passing standard that is not a percentage — here is how the MBLEx is actually marked.

What the passing standard actually is

FSMTB uses a criterion-referenced passing standard rather than a round percentage: licensed practitioners, always including entry-level ones, define the minimum competence for safe and effective practice, and the FSMTB Board adopts the standard on the experts’ recommendation. Results are reported only as PASS or FAIL: FSMTB does not publish a numeric score, a score scale or a cut score. A pass is shown on screen as soon as you finish; candidates who fail receive a diagnostic report by content area. The consequence for you: there is no published “get 70% and you pass” rule to aim at, and a raw percentage from a practice test does not translate directly into a verdict on the real exam.

The score maths

Items presented100
Average time per item1.1 minutes
FormatFixed-length adaptive
Result reportedPass or fail

The MBLEx is a fixed-length computer-adaptive test (CAT): everyone answers 100 questions, but the difficulty of each question depends on how you answered the ones before it. Questions must be answered in the order they are presented, with no skipping and no going back. Because the exam adapts and only a PASS or FAIL is reported, FSMTB publishes no score scale and no count of questions you can afford to miss.

The hard rule is time: you must answer all 100 questions within 110 minutes. If you do not, the attempt is scored as a fail and no diagnostic report is issued.

Do all questions count?

FSMTB does not publish whether the 100 questions include any unscored items, so there is nothing to gain from guessing which ones might not count. Treat every question as scored.

What the pass rate tells you

FSMTB does publish pass rates. Its Annual Report 2025 gives a 70.4% first-time pass rate for July 2024 to June 2025, with 17,160 MBLEx candidates tested in total; the year before (July 2023 to June 2024) it was 70%. Put the other way, roughly three in ten first-time candidates do not pass. FSMTB does not publish a separate rate for repeat candidates, so treat any retake pass rate you cannot trace to FSMTB as decoration.

What this means for your study plan

Three things follow from how this exam is marked.

Stop chasing a percentage. A practice score of 72% is not a prediction, because the MBLEx is adaptive, reports only PASS or FAIL and has no published cut score. What a practice score is good for is finding the domains where you are weak.

Answer everything, in time. On the MBLEx an unanswered question is worse than a zero: if all 100 are not answered within 110 minutes, the attempt is scored as a fail with no diagnostic report. Questions come in order and you cannot skip or go back, so pace yourself at about a minute per question and guess rather than stall.

Work in volume, not in re-reading. Recognition feels like knowledge and is not. The only reliable signal that you are ready is a large number of unfamiliar questions answered correctly under time pressure.

That last part is what a question bank is for. Practise MBLEx questions free, then work the domains your results expose.

FAQ

What is the passing score for the MBLEx?

FSMTB reports MBLEx results only as PASS or FAIL. It uses a criterion-referenced standard adopted by the FSMTB Board and does not publish a numeric score, a scale or a cut score, so there is no official percentage to aim at.

How many questions can I get wrong on the MBLEx?

FSMTB does not publish a cut score, and the exam is computer-adaptive, so any specific number of allowed misses you see quoted is a guess rather than a rule.

What is the MBLEx pass rate?

FSMTB publishes it. The FSMTB Annual Report 2025 lists a first-time pass rate of 70.4% for July 2024 to June 2025, with 17,160 candidates tested in total. The year before (July 2023 to June 2024) it was 70%. FSMTB does not publish a separate rate for repeat candidates.

Do unanswered questions count against me on the MBLEx?

Yes, heavily. You must answer all 100 questions within 110 minutes; if any are unanswered when time runs out, the attempt is scored as a fail and no diagnostic report is issued. Questions are answered in order with no skipping, so keep moving and guess rather than run out the clock.
