LEED Green Associate Requirements 2026: Who Can Sit the Exam and What It Costs
There is no eligibility review: anyone can register, accept GBCI’s terms and book a seat. Here is what that involves, and what the exam now covers.

What the LEED Green Associate credential is
USGBC LEED Green Associate is awarded by GBCI. It is the foundational LEED credential and the usual first step before a LEED AP with Specialty. There is no application review: anyone can register, and GBCI’s only conditions are agreeing to its Disciplinary and Exam Appeals Policy and the credential maintenance requirements, plus a parental consent form for candidates under 18. The paperwork that does trip people up is the ID check on exam day.
The eligibility gates, in order
There is nothing for GBCI to check before you pay. These are the only conditions the candidate handbook sets.

The 170/200 standard is a scaled score, not 85% of the questions. This is the prerequisite tier: the LEED AP specialty credentials sit on top of it.
What it costs
The published fee is $250 standard, $200 for USGBC members, $100 for enrolled students. Budget past that number: most candidates also pay for a review course or a question bank, and every attempt costs the full fee again. After three failed attempts within 12 months you must wait 90 days before registering again. The cheapest way to sit this exam once is to over-prepare for the first attempt.

The exam is now on LEED v5. The last LEED v4 Green Associate exam was on 26 April 2026. A v5 beta ran from 28 April to 30 June 2026, and the final v5 exam has been live since September 2026. The format is unchanged - 100 questions in 2 hours, 170 to pass - but the content follows LEED v5, so v4 study material is out of date.
How long the process takes
There is no experience to accrue and no approval to wait for, so only two clocks matter. The first is the registration window: a paid registration is good for one attempt within 12 months of the registration date, and letting it lapse means paying again. The second is the rescheduling clock: moving or cancelling is free 46 or more days before the exam, costs $30 at 30-45 days and $60 at 4-29 days, and is not possible in the last 3 days.
Plan backwards from the date you want the credential in hand, not forwards from the day you decide to start. Register when you are close to ready rather than months ahead, so the 12-month window and the rescheduling fees do not catch you.
Why candidates get turned away
Applications are not reviewed, so nothing is sent back. Candidates are turned away on exam day instead, and the reasons repeat. A first and last name that does not exactly match the ID — GBCI must be told at least 10 business days before the exam. An ID that is a photocopy, a digital copy or expired. Arriving after the appointment time. Someone walking into the room during a remotely proctored exam. Each one forfeits the full exam fee. None of these are judgement calls you can argue your way past — they are checkboxes. Read the handbook’s ID rules as though they were a contract.
