LEED Green Associate Passing Score Explained: What a Pass Actually Takes

Scaled scores, unscored pretest items and a passing standard that is not a percentage — here is how the LEED Green Associate is actually marked.

USGBC LEED Green Associate scoring and pass rate explained

What the passing standard actually is

GBCI does not mark this exam as a simple percentage. The published standard is 170 on a scale of 125 to 200. That number is a scaled score, which is not the same thing as the number of questions you answered correctly.

The exam is now on LEED v5. The last LEED v4 Green Associate exam was on 26 April 2026. A v5 beta ran from 28 April to 30 June 2026, and GBCI used its data to set the cut score for the final v5 exam, live since September 2026. The format and the standard are unchanged: 100 questions in 2 hours, 170 to pass.

Scaled scoring exists so that a candidate who sits a slightly harder form is not punished for it. Raw answers are converted onto a fixed scale, and the conversion moves a little between forms. That is why the certifying body publishes a scale point rather than a question count: the number of items you can afford to miss genuinely is not a constant.

Why some questions do not count

GBCI’s handbook confirms the exam mixes scored and unscored questions, placed at random and never flagged; the unscored ones gather data for future forms. It does not print the split, but the eight LEED v5 domain counts add up to 85, which leaves 15 unscored — the same 15 the v4 handbook stated. Assume every question counts, because you have no way to tell which ones do not.

What the pass rate tells you

GBCI does not publish a headline pass rate for this exam, and the numbers circulating on forums are usually someone’s cohort rather than a national figure. Treat any percentage you cannot trace to the certifying body as decoration.

What this means for your study plan

Three things follow from how this exam is marked.

Stop chasing a percentage. A practice score of 72% is not a prediction, because the conversion between raw answers and the reported scale is not published and moves between forms. What a practice score is good for is finding the domains where you are weak.

Answer everything. There is no negative marking on this style of exam, so an unanswered item is a guaranteed zero where a guess is not. Candidates lose real points to the clock, not to the content.

Work in volume, not in re-reading. Recognition feels like knowledge and is not. The only reliable signal that you are ready is a large number of unfamiliar questions answered correctly under time pressure.

That last part is what a question bank is for. Practise LEED Green Associate questions free, then work the domains your results expose.

FAQ

What is the passing score for the LEED Green Associate?

170 on a scale of 125 to 200. It is a scaled score, not 170 correct answers and not 85% of the questions. On the final LEED v5 exam your score appears on screen when you finish.

How many questions can I get wrong on the LEED Green Associate?

The raw-to-scaled conversion is not published, so any specific number of allowed misses you see quoted is someone's guess rather than a rule.

What is the LEED Green Associate pass rate?

GBCI does not publish a headline pass rate for this exam. Figures on forums describe single cohorts, not the national result.

Do unanswered questions count against me on the LEED Green Associate?

An unanswered item scores zero, and there is no penalty for a wrong guess, so there is never a reason to leave one blank. Watch the clock and make sure every item has an answer before time expires.
