The route, start to finish

Becoming a registered dietitian is a fixed sequence: an approved program, the CDR RD exam, then whatever your state requires on top. Here is every stop in order, with realistic timings.

    Earn a bachelor's degree with ACEND coursework

    About 4 years

    Complete an ACEND-accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (or enter a coordinated/graduate program that includes it) in nutrition, food science and related sciences.

    Complete a graduate degree

    Since January 1, 2024, a graduate degree from a USDE-accredited institution is required to become exam-eligible for the first time; many students pick a coordinated or Future Education Model graduate program that bundles it with supervised practice.

    Finish 1,000+ hours of supervised practice

    Complete an ACEND-accredited dietetic internship, coordinated program, FG program, or ISPP providing at least 1,000 hours of supervised practice/experiential learning.

    Get verified and authorized by CDR

    Your program director submits your eligibility to CDR; Pearson VUE then emails an Authorization to Test, usually within a week, valid for one year.

    Pass the Registration Examination for Dietitians

    3-hour exam

    Schedule at a Pearson VUE center, pay $250, and reach a scaled score of 25 (1-50 scale) on the 125-145 question adaptive exam.

    Obtain state licensure where required

    Apply to your state board; many states require a license (often granted on the basis of the RDN credential), others regulate only the title, and a few do not regulate the occupation.

    Ongoing, 5-year cycles

    Pay CDR's annual registration maintenance fee and log 75 CPEUs (including 1 ethics CPEU) in a Professional Development Portfolio every 5 years.

Step one: the right program

The program is the one step you cannot shortcut. The exam body checks where you trained before it lets you sit, so an unaccredited course can cost you the whole route.

The exam itself

Time: 180 minutes
Where you test: Computer-based at Pearson VUE test centers, by appointment, year-round. Appointment is 3.5 hours: 3 hours of testing, 20-minute tutorial, 10-minute post-exam survey. No remote/online proctoring option is described by CDR.
Passing standard: Scaled score; the exam is scored on a scale of 1-50 and the minimum scaled score to pass is 25. The number of correct answers needed to reach 25 varies by exam form.

Licensure: what your state adds

The RD/RDN is a national credential from CDR; licensure is a separate, state-level legal authorization to practice. According to BLS, many states require dietitians to be licensed, others require only registration or certification to use certain titles, and a few have no regulations. Check your state board's rules, including any state-specific retest rules for licensure purposes.

Pay and job outlook

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics files registered dietitians under “Dietitians and Nutritionists”. Median means half earn more and half less; pay moves a long way with state, setting and experience, so read this as a benchmark, not an offer.

Keeping the credential
