What actually exists
The Professional Cloud Network Engineer exam is 50 to 60 questions in two hours for $200, and Google does not publish a passing score — you get pass or fail with no number. It is also the most technically specific certification in Google's professional track: VPC design and Shared VPC, routes and firewall policy, the full load-balancing family, Cloud DNS and CDN, hybrid interconnect, and network security. The resource shelf is shorter than for the Architect exam, and the parts that exist lean heavily on hands-on.

The pattern to notice: everything official is strong and everything third-party is thin. On this exam that is workable, because Google's own material is unusually good and the labs are the part that actually moves your score.

Order matters more than usual here. Reading about load balancer selection teaches you the table; building three of them teaches you the decision.

Which resource covers which exam area
Google's exam guide splits PCNE into five sections. It publishes their titles but not percentage weights, so plan by section rather than by arithmetic.

- Implementing VPC networksSection 2Hands-on labs. Subnets, routes, firewall policy, peering and Private Service Connect.

The two gaps are opposites: load balancing is labbable and under-drilled, hybrid connectivity is barely labbable and must be learned from documentation. Split your weak-area time accordingly.
What to skip
The shelf is short enough that the main risk is buying something aimed at a different Google exam entirely.
Do not spend money on these
- Associate Cloud Engineer material as PCNE preparation. It is a genuine prerequisite in knowledge terms, but it is nowhere near the depth this exam asks for.
- Old Sybex or course editions. Google's networking surface changes fast enough that a three-year-old resource misses whole services.
- Dumps. Google revokes certifications and bans candidates, and with no published pass mark you have no idea how close a dump-fuelled attempt actually got.
- Year-long Skills Boost subscriptions. Buy the month you will actually study in. The subscription is a lab pass, not a library card.
- Multi-cloud networking courses. Interesting for the job, wrong scope for the exam.
The layer nobody budgets for is question volume

What is the passing score for the PCNE exam?
Google does not publish one. Every Google Cloud certification returns pass or fail with no numeric score and no domain breakdown, which is exactly why the official exam guide matters so much — it is the only scope calibration you are given.
Is the Skills Boost subscription worth it for PCNE?
For most candidates, yes — for one focused month rather than a year. The value is in the hands-on labs, which cover Shared VPC, load balancing and hybrid connectivity setups that are fiddly to build from scratch. Study intensively during the month you pay for.
Can I prepare for PCNE with the free tier alone?
Yes for VPC, firewall, routing, peering and most load balancer work. Hybrid interconnect is the exception: Cloud VPN is labbable, but Dedicated and Partner Interconnect are not something an individual can provision, so that section has to be learned from documentation.
How long does PCNE take to prepare for?
Sixty-five to eighty-five hours if you are a network engineer new to Google Cloud, and forty-five to sixty if you already work in GCP daily. The exam is deep rather than broad, so hours spent in the console pay back faster than hours spent reading.
