What the CSSGB credential is
ASQ CSSGB - Certified Six Sigma Green Belt is awarded by ASQ. It is not a course certificate you can buy your way into — ASQ decides whether you are allowed to sit the exam at all, and that decision is made before you ever see a question. Candidates who treat the application as a formality are the ones who lose a testing window to a paperwork problem.
The eligibility gates, in order
ASQ checks these in sequence, and failing any one of them stops the application. Work through them top to bottom before you pay a fee.
Gate 1
Three years of on-the-job experience in one or more areas of the Six Sigma Green Belt Body of Knowledge
Gate 2
The experience must be in a full-time, paid role
Gate 3
No educational waiver exists - a degree does not substitute for the three years
Unlike the Black Belt, the Green Belt has no project requirement, so the three years of experience is the only gate. The exam is open book, and ASQ members save $100 on the initial examination fee.
What it costs
The exam is $483, or $383 for ASQ members. A retake is $283 whether or not you are a member; it must be taken within two years of your last attempt and cannot fall in the same testing window. Changing an appointment costs $130, and if your application is declined ASQ refunds the fee minus a $130 processing charge. CSSGB is a lifetime certification, so there is no recertification fee to budget for later.

How long the process takes
Three clocks run at once and candidates usually notice only two. The first is the experience clock: the three years have to be full-time, paid work in areas of the Green Belt Body of Knowledge, so time spent in the wrong role does not count no matter how long you spent there. The second is the audit clock: ASQ audits applications at random, and if yours is selected you have 30 days to return the audit form, with a manager, supervisor or colleague verifying your most recent experience; ASQ reviews it within 7 business days. The third is the eligibility window: once approved you can sit the exam in any of three consecutive testing windows, and letting all three lapse means reapplying and paying again.
Plan backwards from the date you want the credential in hand, not forwards from the day you decide to start. CSSGB is offered only in even-numbered months, and each window closes to applications several weeks before it opens, so apply early.
Why applications get sent back
The failure modes are boring and they repeat. Experience in a part-time or unpaid role. Experience that does not map to any area of the Green Belt Body of Knowledge. A degree offered in place of experience, which ASQ does not accept. An audit form that is not back within 30 days, after which ASQ declines the application and keeps the $130 processing fee. None of these are judgement calls you can argue your way past — they are checkboxes. Read the eligibility page as though it were a contract, because for the purposes of your application it is one.
Once you are approved, the work is question volume. Practise CSSGB questions free and find out where you actually stand before you book a date.
