CFP Passing Score Explained: What a Pass Actually Takes

What the passing standard actually is
CFP Board sets the passing standard through Standard Setting, a formal process in which CFP professionals decide the minimum level of competence needed to pass. CFP Board says it does not predetermine the pass rate and has no set percentage of questions you must answer correctly. The result is reported as pass or fail, so there is no “get 70% and you pass” rule to aim at, and a raw percentage from a practice test does not translate directly into a verdict on the real exam.

The CFP exam does not use a scaled score. Each question is worth one point, and passing depends on your total across both 3-hour sections measured against the cut score set by Standard Setting. CFP Board does not publish that cut score. You get a preliminary result straight after the exam and the official result by email about four weeks after the testing window closes. Failing candidates also get a diagnostic report showing relative strengths and weaknesses across the Principal Knowledge Topics.
Does every question count?
CFP Board does not describe any unscored pretest items on the CFP exam. Its scoring page says each question counts for one point, and its candidate handbook links every one of the 170 questions to at least one Principal Knowledge Topic. Treat all 170 as scored and budget time for all of them: each 3-hour section holds 85 questions, split into subsections of 43 and 42, and you cannot go back to a subsection once you move on.
What the pass rate tells you
Published figures for the July 2026 exam: 66% overall, 69% for first-time takers and 57% for repeat candidates (2,388 of 3,621 passed). The two windows before it were 67% (March 2026) and 64% (November 2025).
Read that as a description of the candidate pool rather than of the exam. Everyone sitting has already finished CFP Board-approved coursework, which CFP Board verifies before you can test; the degree and experience can come later. The more useful number is the gap: repeat candidates have passed at a lower rate than first-time takers in every window in CFP Board’s historical table, and in July 2026 the gap was 12 points. A second attempt with the same preparation is a worse bet than the first.
What this means for your study plan
Three things follow from how this exam is marked.
Stop chasing a percentage. A practice score of 72% is not a prediction, because CFP Board does not publish the cut score and has no set percentage needed to pass. What a practice score is good for is finding the domains where you are weak.
Answer everything. CFP Board scores one point per question and describes no penalty for a wrong answer, so an unanswered item is a guaranteed zero where a guess is not. Candidates lose real points to the clock, not to the content.
Work in volume, not in re-reading. Recognition feels like knowledge and is not. The only reliable signal that you are ready is a large number of unfamiliar questions answered correctly under time pressure.
