What actually exists
AZ-140 is a specialty exam: 40 to 60 questions, 100 minutes, 700 out of 1000 to pass, $165 to sit. Specialty exams get specialty-sized resource shelves, and AZ-140's is thin — no mainstream Exam Ref title, a handful of courses of uneven vintage, and a docs set that changes as fast as Azure Virtual Desktop itself does. The upside is that Microsoft Learn's free path is genuinely good and AVD is easy to lab, which is fortunate, because labbing it is not optional here.

Read the inventory as a instruction: because the book layer does not exist, the lab layer has to be bigger than usual. Candidates who fail AZ-140 are almost always the ones who studied it like a knowledge exam.

Three gap rows on one exam is what a thin shelf looks like. All three close the same way — time in a real subscription — which is why the lab line item deserves your money before any course does.
What to skip
With few resources available, the temptation is to buy whatever exists. Two categories are worse than nothing.
Do not spend money on these
- Courses recorded before the last major AVD changes. Check the update date, not the rating. A stale AZ-140 course teaches workflows that no longer exist in the portal.
- Generic "Azure admin" bundles. AZ-104 material overlaps only partially and skips the AVD specifics that this specialty exam is entirely about.
- Dumps. Microsoft's exam policy is enforced and results are revoked. It is also a bad trade on a $165 exam you can pass with free official material and a lab.
- Buying a lab environment. Your own subscription with nightly deallocation costs less than any hosted lab subscription for this exam.
- Waiting for a book to be published. There is no sign of one. Build the lab instead.
The layer nobody budgets for is question volume

Is there a book for AZ-140?
No mainstream Exam Ref or Sybex title targets AZ-140, which is normal for specialty exams and is the main reason candidates describe it as under-resourced. Microsoft Learn's free path plus the product documentation is the replacement, and between them they cover the skills measured properly.
Can I pass AZ-140 without hands-on Azure?
It is a poor bet. A large share of the exam is scenario and troubleshooting framing that assumes you have deployed a host pool and seen profile containers misbehave. Budget for a small amount of Azure consumption — it is the highest-value spend on this exam.
How much does the AZ-140 lab cost to run?
Twenty to sixty dollars across a study block if you deallocate session hosts when you are not using them, and less if you still have new-account credits. The expensive mistake is leaving a pooled host pool running around the clock for six weeks.
How long does AZ-140 take to prepare for?
Fifty to sixty-five hours for an administrator who already works with Azure identity, networking and storage. Add roughly twenty if those are new, because AVD sits on top of all three and the exam assumes them.
