AWS Exam Question Types: Multiple Choice, Multiple Response, and More
Guide to AWS exam question types including multiple choice, multiple response, and scenario-based questions with strategies.
Table of Contents
AWS certification exams use several question formats. Understanding each type and having a strategy for them improves your speed and accuracy during the exam.
Question Format Types
AWS exams primarily use three question formats: multiple choice (one correct answer from four options), multiple response (two or more correct answers from five or more options), and scenario-based questions (longer stems requiring analysis of a described situation).
Multiple Choice Questions
These have one correct answer out of four options. Use elimination: identify and rule out obviously wrong answers first. Usually you can eliminate two options quickly, leaving a 50/50 choice. Look for AWS keywords like "most cost-effective", "least operational overhead", or "highly available" to guide your selection.
Multiple Response Questions
These tell you exactly how many answers to select (e.g., "Select TWO"). Treat each option independently and evaluate whether it meets the stated requirements. Partial credit is not given; you must select all correct answers.
Warning: Read carefully whether the question asks for TWO or THREE correct answers. Selecting the wrong number always results in zero marks for that question.
Scenario-Based Questions
Scenario questions present a business situation and ask you to recommend the best AWS solution. Read the question stem (the actual question) first, then read the scenario for relevant details. Identify key requirements: cost, availability, performance, security, or compliance.
Strategies for Each Type
- Always read the question before the options
- Identify keywords: "MOST", "LEAST", "minimum", "maximum"
- Eliminate obviously wrong answers first
- For scenario questions, list requirements before evaluating options
- Flag difficult questions and return to them later
- Never leave a question unanswered (no penalty for guessing)
